Silkie thread!

Now, also... I have a blue hen, the splash pullet, and a black rooster and a splash rooster. I know, not enough hens!!! I had 2 die on me :( 1 last fall, it kept getting cocci, not sure why. I think there was something wrong with it. the others didn't get cocci. just her. and now I lost the other last week which I can only assume is worms as she was thin. So I need to get this under control if we have worms going on!

Question is, are those bad colors to put together? they all get along, but to hatch out chicks, is this a bad color combo? And can I keep some of the chicks to add to my flock, or does that create really bad bloodlines if they breed?

I had a Doberman, just passed recently at 14. Short hair, but the pizza pan turned and left when he saw him. Someone from ADT security came, and wouldn't get out of the car. Told her I already had a security system. Was sweet with the other animals (liked to chase the horses, but all my dogs love that).
So did that pizza pan just roll away or what?

The new Silkies are doing good in the brooder with the meat chicks. Found the FF and water ok. Thanks again Chicknlove for the Catdance Silkies.
Waiting for pictures!

I won a chicken show with this hen, what do you guys think about her?
Very pretty! Love her wings. :D
Hi Norcal friends :) Been crazy around here... A silkie chick with wry neck passed, my EE is better from her URI, but not laying yet. I got some Coturnix quail that are slowly laying & I'm just managing the different ages & cages :) I found an egg my leghorn laid today streaked with blood. Should I be concerned?? Also I'm looking for more quail to buy, but can't seem to find any locally. Anybody know of anybody with quail for sale?
First eggs usually have a little blood. Totally normal.
Soooooo.............. the guy I got these from says they are silver.

??????????? What do I have?

Very likely gray (silver partridge)
Hi guys, my pullet laid her first egg! Is it right that I can't incubate it?

andlook at my roosters and the chicks, aww. the hen is in the middle of it there.

Here is how thin the pullet who just laid an egg looks. I am going to try worming them I guess. Can you hatch eggs when they're on a wormer?

see how the keel bone protrudes?? ugh. I dont' understand what is going on. can it be anything besides worms? she acts normally.
Some girls are just on the scrawny side but worming every three or four months is a good idea.
Hi silkie experts, I have a question: We first got our silkie 2 weeks ago. She layed one egg on the monday after we got her, and another on the wednesday that we got her. Since then, we have had 0 eggs from her. She hasn't layed for a week and a half. Is this normal in silkies? I knew they were bad layers but we weren't expecting this. Thanks! Also, we know she is fairly young, still under a year.
Very common to cease laying after a move. They lay the one or two that have already form and then stop for up to a month.
I can't figure out the fermented feed. I know I've read a lot about it, but I don't quite understand how it is done. Plus, is it very time consuming? I mean, the silkies don't barely go through food, how often would I need to make it up?

Maybe I'll pop the egg into the incubator and see what happens. is there anything wrong wtih a small chick? does it turn into a small hen? or does it just get a small start?
They start small but catch up. I don't set them unless the egg is a normal shape.

Awesome! Silver partridge would be fabulous!

When a hen is taking care of chicks, when does she start laying eggs again? will she not start up until she's done taking care of chicks?

What you describe could possibly be related to Mareks. I don't want to scare you, so google Avianatlas + Mareks. The website is affiliated with Cornell University. See if the pics on there resemble what you are dealing with.
You did scare me.............but when I looked it up, it doesn't look anything like what my chick has (at least I hope.) Both of Hazey Daisy's feet and legs have feeling and movement in them and she does walk around/eat/drink well. Her eyes are clear and normal. I'm guessing it is more in the hip area and I'm also thinking she isn't in pain. I plan on trying to treat it like "straddle leg" with flexible sport tape. But, in the mean time....

one of the coolest things happened today while we had a yard sale today (in regard to this little chick). I met a retired neighbor lady who also has silkies. (We just moved to this house March 1st and haven't met all our neighbors.) She said she would love to take Hazey Daisy (the baby that needs extra help) and continue to nurse it. She was adament about me not killing it and willing to take the extra time and effort to give it a good life. Don't you just love when things work out that way!

There's nothing really to figure out. Start with a small bucket. Add some all purpose crumble. Add a glug of Unpasturized Apple cider vinegar with the mother (found in the health food isle of grocery store). Stir in enough water to make it soupy. Leave it to sit for a couple days. Scoop, drain, feed. Chickens thrive on it. Sometimes I stir in plain yogurt. Some times I crush a fresh clove or two of garlic and add it. I keep my bucket in a corner in the kitchen with a cotton tea towel over the top of it. I scoop out my flocks needs into a strainer and take it out to the barn once a day. My chickens are healthy, worm free, in good weight, laying, breeding, and fertile. What more could we want?
