Silkie thread!

Hello all! I am new to the Silkie breed and am already in love with these funny little creatures. I have 5 babies now, hatched on April 9th that came from a breeder. I started with 4, one died shortly after coming home with what we suspect was just "failure to thrive",..The breeder was kind enough to replace him/her for me, and I wound up leaving with 2 more..thats chicken math for ya.

Anyhow, I will be trying to read through the thousands of posts on here to learn everything I can about these babies. I have raised chicks before, but nothing as teeny as these. We love all of our chickens, but the silkies are a little extra special :)

I have to take some good pictures later, but here is a camera phone pic.

Great photo! you are doing the right thing by learning all you can.

Good news and bad news....
bad news, my wry neck chick suddenly took a turn for the worse and today I found him dead, after apparently having one of his flopping spells and landing with his head in the water and drowning himself.

good news, one of my silkies hatched 6 babies (mostly LF mixes, olive eggers, cochin crosses, wyandotte crosses) today and yesterday! She is a first time mom, and is doing very good with them.I have another broody silkie on 4 turkey eggs due next week, pics are sure to show up on here of them too when they hatch.

So sorry you lost him but glad you had something to cheer you up. So cute!!

it can take up to a week to kick in and after that still take another few weeks to completely recover. Make sure the poly-vi-sol also has NO iron. I treated a severe case with only poly-vi-sol, 2-3 drops 4 times a day.
Are there certain kind of products/brands that you guys would recommend for treating wry neck? I'm thinking I should have these things handy in case I ever end up with a chick that needs help. Hopefully not, but better be safe than sorry, right? I have the Save-A-Chick probiotic and vitamins/electrolytes packs, that's about it.
The poly-vi-sol, that's just something you can buy in the baby section of any store? What about the selenium? I'm assuming I would want the drop form? Same for vitamins E and B?

I found my poly-vi-sol in the vitamins/supplements section at our walmart.

Help Guys! I need some quick advice! Today is day 18 of incubation for my Catdance babies. I just took them off the turner. However, I did not notice that 3 had already started to pip! The incubator was open for about 5 minutes! Are they going to be shrink wrapped, what do I do?? I have waited so long for these! Please advise! Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about teh vit E or B and the selenium, Poly-vi-sol is all you need. It already has those in it. You can overdose on vit E. Yes you can buy poly-vi-sol in the baby section of walmart, a grocery store, or a pharmacy.

That's easy enough.

I'll have to put the poly on my shopping list.
Thanks!

need some help. So I think the reason nori can't lay is because she is prolapsed =( i soaked her again and tried to work it and she was just prolapsing, no egg. I put some nupercainal on, it's like preperation H but better. I have heard before that any sort of "caine" is toxic to chickens

But what choice do i have... I can't bring her to the vet again. Poor thing, I hope she makes it. She's been such a trooper. Does anyone else have any suggestions?
I wish I could help more :/ I hope she gets better soon :(
