Silkie thread!

Mine were all terrified of me (one still is lol) so I pulled them out one at a time and set them on a towel where they could watch me do housework. Occasionally I would talk to them and come over with food in my hand. Now when I pull them out they talk to me and peep for me when I leave. Except the one...still working on her. But time and patience will pay off. Maybe soon they will even hop on my lap.

My Cochin chicks do so I know it's possible.
Thanks for the advice :)

Hi, I got 18 hatching eggs from Catdance Silkies. It's day 22 and only four have hatched and that was yesterday. No hatches in more than 12 hours.

There are 11 eggs still in the incubator that looked viable at 15 days. I'll give them a couple more days just in case. I opened it long enough to take the ones that have hatched out (I also had other standard eggs and quite a few of them hatched yesterday morning). I don't hear any noise from the eggs that are in there. Not sure what I did wrong. :(

Do you ever / often have late hatchers with the silkies? What do you run humidity at during the first 18 days and during the last 3 days? If you hatch silkies and other chicken breeds, do you do anything with different with the silkies?

I have a genesis 1588. Temp was stable at 100 +/- 0.5. I used the 'dry hatch' method. Humidity stayed between 25% - 45% during the first 18 days (mostly right about 30%). I raised it to 65% - 70% the last three days. Any advice for next time?

Thanks,
Shanna

I hatched twelve Catdance eggs in my Genesis 1588 by not raising the humidity until the first egg pipped. Lockdown didn't start until the first internal pip. They drown in the shell very easily. I ran humidity above 25 and below 45% until that first egg pipped. Then I slowly bumped it to 65% using a tube I pushed through an extra ventilation hole I put in the side. I dripped distilled water onto a sponge.
edited to add: I do not rely on the humidity gauge built onto the incubator. I use a reptile thermometer/hygrometer inside the bator.

I wondered if that could be the case - smaller eggs, so too much humidity / drown more easily. Soooo sad! I feel awful about it. Probably not a good idea to try and hatch the silkie eggs with standards then. Thanks for the feedback. Next time I'll try your suggestion.

Hi everyone!! I'm new to Silkie. Became a silkie owner a couple of hours ago. My orps hatched out some silkie eggs.

I think I have 2 blues and 1 splash. Is it correct?

Anyone have any gender guesses about these two showgirls?
Sorry if this is not the right thread, but hopefully no one minds too much...
Both are about 4 months old. I gave them a bath so I could get some decent comb shots. They are definitely going through a molt though - lots of pinfeathers!!
Their combs both look more or less the same.

Hard to tell, but i'm, gonna say boy for #1 and girl for #2. Just a guess though.

I have my silkie eggs in a Brinsea Mini Advance... the only I can do to alter the humidity is filling the water cup in the middle there. it is so small there isn't a place to put a hydrometer. My friend had trouble hatching my eggs in her incubator...do you think I'll have issues with this incubator? it regulates the humidity on its own it seems. will I have trouble hatching them out like my friend did? I don't want to drown them!

I'm gonna try again with the "leave them alone" method lol. The humidity here is very high so I won't add any water until lockdown and even then just a few drops or so. I have 2 silkie hens i'm quarantining for my friend and they are laying while they are here so she aid I can collect all the eggs and hatch them.

Thank
Have you tried Craigs list? You can find all sorts of things there. And if you're just looking to break your broody hen out of her broodiness, any chick will do. :D I did that for my 3 hens, gave them all the mixed breed chicks that hatched in the incubator.

You'll never know what you get from a feed store. One of the kids here at the farm has bought chicks at Shagbark Chick Days when they guarantee all chicks to be pullets. Well, each time she has ended up with a cockerel and rest pullets. They make great pets though. But if you're looking for good quality and pure breeds, definitely contact a breeder. :D

Cute!
