Silkie thread!

No a frizzle I am actual breed but u can frizzle any chicken just like u can silkie it
I don't know... not from what i've read. How would you know if you have a pure bred frizzle? I'm getting another from my friend who has frizzles but they are from a mixed frizzle boy and regular mixed hens. From what I understand "frizzles" speak more for the mutant gene that makes the feathers curl rather than one exact breed.

Here's one article showing it: http://www.backyardpoultrymag.com/5-5/frizzles_one_of_our_odd_breeds/

very frustrated. these chicks should be pipping/ hatching out by now :( my pullet has 5 eggs, and my hen has 3. None have hatched still :( I'm going to give them a few days still, but I'm pretty sure they were due yesterday. possibly today, but who knows. Hopefully they hatch out. I'm starting to worry!

Newbie here and I have 3 silkie hens and 1 rooster. I have had them for 3 days. Jill, has just stated laying and she has laid for last 2 days. She is a very friendly girl and loves to be near me when I'm in the run. Sunday she laid an egg in the nest box. Today she laid an egg right near me. I think she just wanted to be near me. I'm just worried now that she won't lay in the nest box. Should I be worried that she will just lay all over or was she just wanting to stay near me?? Any ideas???
Occasionally mine lay an egg outside at a random spot. I don't know why. I wouldn't worry about it too much. You've only had them for 3 days, maybe your hen is still getting used to her new environment. Give them a few days to really settle in and feel like home.

Great looking runs!

Here they are. Maybe they are silkies?

#1, #3, and #4 look like frizzled cochins, #2 could be a smooth frizzled silkie? Watch to see if it grows a crest at all. It looks to have black skin, but unfortunately looks to be just smooth feathered so if it's a frizzle it may just be a carrier.
Wouldn't 1, 3 and 4 have feathers curling if they were frizzled? 1 and 3 are probably still too young, but what about 4? At what age do the feathers start to curl up?

Just thought I'd share this. My silkie roo is not an agressive fella at all. Until today. I had everybody out doing the free range and one og my RIR girls ( the big kids are kept in a seperate pen from my silkies) was dust bathing and a hawk stooped down. I was all like "$@*%, not afreakin'gain" (we just had one of our cornishX get cut up by a hawk a couple of weeks ago.) Mr. Silkie Roo jumped and tore the belly feathers off the hawk. Now I have hawk feathers all over my yard and my silkie roo is so proud of himself, he's almost intolerable! LOL. He aparently thought he deserved a reward from the RIR hen and proceeded to chase her all over the yard until the big rooster put a stop to it. Too funny!

That's one tough guy! lol

Have you candled the eggs, they're all fertile? Give them a little time, especially if you're not sure if the due date yesterday or today. We'll keep ours fingers crossed!

Yes, I got rid of all the unfertile ones, these 8 were the ones that were growing :) there were 9, but my pullet kicked one out of the nest a few days ago, but have died or something.

) the two blues came from a breeder I know down here but the rest, 3 ameraucanas, 2 polish, and another white silkie came from the swap. DH is going to flip when he gets home next Tuesday !

Yes I think the first Polish is a gold laced. The other might be a Splash. My white crested blue has more yellow on it as a chick, but I wouldn't rule that out either.

My frizzled Cochin hen hatched out a cute little Silkie chick yesterday! Its parents are the hen in my avatar and a smutty buff rooster. He's got terrible color, but has good type I think. He's so round he looks like a little basketball.
Anyway, Curly Sue is doing a great job taking care of her chick, hopefully she keeps it up bc its the only one that hatched :/
I can't wait to see how it feathers out though, should be interesting! Its mostly buff, but its got light brown chipmunk markings on its back :)

Mine lay all over but usually in the same place each day.
If you breed a white silkie with a white silkie will all there chicks be white.
White to white breeds true.
Very nice set up!!
Hi Fellow Silkie Lovers!
I had my very first home bred buff Silkie chick hatch today. But the poor little thing has spradle leg. I used the bandaid method and put the chick upright in a very small bowl with padding. The poor little thing kept flipping backwards. Am I missing anything? How long do I leave the bandaid on? Any thoughts would be great!!
You may not be dealing with spradle leg. Do the legs want to stick out in front or out to the sides? To the sides is spradle leg. Tape usually works in 3 or 4 days. I don't know of any help for the ones that want to stick out in front. Hope it's okay!
I know I miss a day or two and it's too many post to read through.

that is an article that I found.
Nystatin worked well for me.

Wow! Great story!!

I am in the same boat with you. its day 20 and nothing yet. I know Silkies are sometimes stubborn though, that's the only thing keeping me sane atm.
