Silkie thread!

Have you figured out how whatever it was got in ???  I have never had a cat get in my coop but that seems like a lot of killing for a cat.  So sad.... I hope you can see how it happened so you can keep whatever it was out 

I'm not sure. I have seen a large opossum (sp?) in the yard and we have armadillos & raccoons. What bothers me is that nothing was eaten or missing. They were just killed. I'm still a mess about this. I called a person on Craigslist and they brought over a rooster. I don't know if it will help but I am hoping he can alert us of danger.

Any guesses as to what I might get if I breed this hen with my paint roo?



This is my roo, he is with my black hens right now but I was thinking about doing a test breeding between them. What coors do you think will be the out come?

Has anyone evr done this pairing before? If so, can you post pictures of the offspring?

My guess, based on what I am learning about genetics is:

You would get Paint and Blue Paint.

Paint is Dominant white over black. If you add Blue - then it is Dominant White over Blue. So half of them would be Paint, the other half Blue Paint.

HOWEVER - that is ONLY if your Paint is a finished product - ie only Dominant White over Black. If there are any other genetics hiding in there - who knows...

Have you hatched out any chicks from the Paint/Black pen? Were they all paints? -- same with the Blue - were her babies all blue, black or splash? If so - then first answer .. if not.. second...

I am thinking of getting a silkie! first of all will silkies go good with 2 Cochins and an austrolorp? My Cochins are so calm and my austrolorp is just a little hyper but not agressive that I can tell she seems to be more scared when I hold her than aggravated.
Second, are there any early indicators on females and males? I know most of the other breeds the males will have shorter wings to start out with and feather out slower than females.

I just feel so awful for you I cant even imagine how I would feel under the circumstances. I am a total paranoid about my night time coop and my poor husband keeps making it more secure for me. I dont know how much it will help either. Mine will get a bit anxious about things flying overhead but not make a real big deal of it.

Good idea thinking of getting a Silkie! I have silkies and just got a few cochin chicks i havent put with the Silkies yet and am planning to get a few more over the weekend. I have seen quite a few people that keep these breeds together. It is really hard to tell males from female Silkies for the first few months( sometimes longer!). I was amazed at how soon you can tell with the cochins!

Almost looks self-blue, but also could be a silver based white like ChickNmamma mentioned.

A self-blue or a silver-based white would be nice. The kids chose a lot of dark blue chicks. I keep joking that they didn't choose many splashes, which are my favorite, but I'll be able to breed myself some.

White is recessive, correct? Does it become dominant in the paint breeding?
