Silkie thread!

Ok, consensus is, Jaz is vaulted - Minkie is not. So one vaulted skull from 5 chicks with vaulted/unvaulted - so far.

Good news is - that broody pile has one chick out! Woo Hoo! Tonight I am going to check the eggs and any unmarked ones will go in the incubator, somebody kept laying eggs in there... until she went broody too!

So I have decided that my little white silkie, Snow, is not a good mommy. She's a great incubator but she did not help her baby. I went to check on her one baby, a mix between a hatchery buff silkie and one if our black hens, and it's in the corner with blood on it! Snow was still just sitting in her best. The poor baby was off in the corner peeping away. It's now inside with neosporin on it. It's just adorable!

And it may be possible that two non-vaulted can make a vaulted too. I got one - but I don't know if my birds were vaulted or non-vaulted because I bought them all grown up.

Just out of curiosity - why do you want vaulted chicks/birds? Silkies do not have a vaulted skull requirement like Polish do. A vault does not make the crest any bigger. I haven't seen any advantages of having a cerebral hemorrhage so I was wondering why you wanted them?
I agree... no reason I can see to breed for it . I have heard that some people have tried to breed it out and havent been successful so far . My understanding was that it came from interbreeding with polish to get the huge crests which Silkies didnt have at originally. I have found out that some of my adults are vaulted when bathing them.

What color is the baby? One of my Silkies does not like black chicks. I don't know why - she puffs up and pecks at them. Any other color is fine - except black.

One of my Mom's black hens does not like white chicks.. except she will kill them - OEG crazy bird!

This one is mostly black except the head is brown. The last baby that I saved from her was a splash silkie. She just seems confused after they are hatched.

Ah yes, some are like that - real feather heads! Well, just use her for an incubator and brood them yourself

I think it makes their crest look fuller. They look beautiful when they do. Is it a bad thing?
Isn't this hen vaulted?

you would have to feel under her crest to tell. Vaulted ha nothing to do with the crest, but with the head. Let me see if I can find a picture of my roo's head wet. He has a vaulted skull.

my non-vaulted female and deceased hen, really no difference in crest
