Very proud of my little Speedy girl. Born on New Year's Day, she started laying last week and never misses a day. She is such a lil cutie.....Silkie x Wyandotte and is getting prettier every day.

He IS so fluffy, and I just gave him a bath so he's gonna be even fluffier tomorrow LOL

How do I give a chicken a proper bath without hurting them or.. well I've NEVER EVER gave a chicken a bath before lol. I've seen youtube clips but I've always been too nervous to do it.

Thunderhead is sick. He is lethargic with diarrhea, so I figured cocci. And it was just sudden. He was fine before we took our daughter to camp, but was weak when we came back four hours later. We took him to the emergency vet last night in hopes we could get some medicine for him since no store was open where I could get any sort of treatment or supplies to hand feed him. They didn't have any cocci medication, but did have syringes, etc. so I could get food and fluids into him and gave me some antibiotics to use if he doesn't show improvement after 24 hours on cocci meds (the whole flock's getting medicated, too). They were limited in their knowledge of chickens, but at least were willing to take a look at him and give me syringes I needed to get Pedialyte into him. He made it through the night without taking a turn for the worse, but there's no improvement. I'm up early today to get some cocci medicine at the local farm store. I've already lost two weak, young chicks and eight six-week-olds to raccoons. My heart will break if I lose another silkie.

It took me awhile to figure out what you were talking about when you said the feathers were coming out of the shaft. What you are seeing is the sheath that protects the feathers when they grow - you will want to roll them between your fingers and take off as many as possible - that will help the feathers fluff up. That's what we are talking about when we say the feathers are "up in rollers" on the crests (where it is usually most noticeable). The birds will preen them off, but you can help them along when you give them a bath.

Yeah he is, thanks! I think I am going to give him to one of the girls here at the farm. I got her hooked on the poultry shows, we've been traveling together to each show. She doesn't have any show quality birds and I've been helping her find a nice one. Problem is, she can't take one home as she already has plenty of pet chickens and mom wouldn't be too happy with more chickens. lol So, what we all agreed on, was that the girl can have a show bird (or two) and keep it here at the farm.

I was almost thinking of selling the self-blue chick because we'll have too many roosters. But I REALLY don't want to sell him. So this solution will work just fine!

I'll just have to find homes for two of our PQ roosters to make room for these cockerels and hope that this little guy will be nice enough to show.

Good thing I have more eggs in the incubator and I started collecting my own Silkie eggs yesterday.

Did the vet take a stool sample? They would be able to see if he has a over load of Coccidia, and check for any worms that could be causing him to go down hill. Check him close for any mites/lice especially around the vent area. Hope he's feeling better soon.

Hi guys,
Rehoming my silkies and keeping only a few of my flock of my oegb's. So will be selling all my chicks and 3 hens a rooster and a cockrel. Willing to sell them in trio's. otherwise I will end up with all my roosters, pm me if you are interested.

I'm not sure, I got them from Tractor Supply, they were in a tub of barred rock chicks. And thank you for welcoming me in, I absolutely love chickens

Wither way, they've very cute.

We have one hen, a white girl that looks a lot like yours. She's the best broody out of the bunch! lol She's far from the standard, but I'd never get rid of that one because she is such an excellent mom.
