Silkie thread!

This lil guy was born with these weird feathers...I thought it was bumps on the skin but a closer look and seen his little feathers are rough looking, what could cause this? The other silkies born were smooth.

Yes, you can get SQ birds from that breeding - I would say the whites probably would have the best chance of being SQ  You will need to wait until the chicks are all grown up to determine who is show quality though - so I wouldn't sell chicks calling them that... but Breeder Quality (assuming you don't throw any with 4 toes) would be fine.

Oh that's great! Thanks for the input!!

Does anyone have thoughts on silkie coop design? Other than the occasional ramp issue and that they don't roost very high, I was wondering what we should do that may be different than a regular chicken coop. I have one special needs older girl with a curled foot. She gets around just fine, but won't use a ramp. She may if it is very low incline and wide with good grip.

My silkies roost just fine when they decide they want to. I have a very low roost for them that's only about a foot off the ground, plus I have one silkie I've found on the higher roosts because she thinks she's one of the bigger birds.

I don't know about the ramp issue with your special needs girl. Anyway you could have low, wide stairs up to the coop? Can she do those?

I am new to chickens and I have started out with 3 red sexlinks and a white leghorn, they are 15 weeks. I soon got a cochin who is 18 weeks, now I have a silkie roo that is 1 year and a silkie hen that is 1 1/2 years. I also have 3 easter egger chicks that are 2 weeks and 1 that is 1 week. My question is can my chickens all live in harmony or am I going to have to keep my silkies and cochin separate in their own coop and run? I have them separated from the others now, as well as the young EE's. I have been looking for info on intergrating them together but I don't see much helpful info. Any info will be much appreciated. I just wont stand to see one of my babies get hurt. I love them all so much!!

Hello and
welcome-byc.gif

And welcome to the wonderful world of Chickens!

It depends on your birds. I have a hatchery quality Silkie with almost no crest, she sees just fine and she lives with the bigger bantams. If your birds have big crests and can't see they may get picked on and might not be able to roost with the big birds. However, if your only rooster is the Silkie then everybody should get along just fine. He will protect the girls from picking on each other - and since he is the only rooster he won't hurt the Silkie girls.

Is your older Silkie girl taking care of the EE chicks (i.e. brooding them)? If so, you can put them all together now, she will protect them from the 4 month old juvenile delinquents. If not you might want to wait another week until they get big enough to run away if they get picked on.

I'm not sure, she is one of my new girls. She is 2 years old. I think she was born with a curled foot and just adapted. you would never know she has it unless you look for it. I know from the former owner that she never used the ramp. I think with a little help she could use a low ramp.
