Silkie thread!

Well I chipped off a small piece where the egg was pipped, and peeled back the membrane, and the chick is alive and moving and breathing but is just sitting there. I am also going to keep an eye on this black one I helped and leave it in the incubator for a while, it's legs look like they might be weird. I have one partridge sizzle in the brooder =D It's so cute! Not a perfect sizzle though, it has pink skin.

well, i got home and it was just sitting there doing nothing. I chipped off a piece of the shell, and nothing. pulled membrane, nothing. it was breathing, but rather slowly. it looked like it was crying, its mouth was opening and shutting over and over and over but no sound came out. I feel like it was going to die anyways, it just is not lively at all. so, i just took it all out of the shell and it is in the incubator. I don't expect it to make it at all. it just isn't lively. really didn't seem lively earlier today either. I thought the last one wasn't lively, but this one is like wayyyy worse. it is still breathing etc, but who knows. there seems to be a lot of yolk sac left. I've never seen one with such a visible yolk sac. I left it attached to the shell. if it lives, it lives. I did my best. I don't think it had much of a chance to begin with. I'll check on it in the middle of the night.

Quote: It has just learned to breathe - so its still getting the hang of it, that's why its mouth is opening and shutting. When they are absorbing the yolk they do not make noises or move a lot, they use their energy to absorb the yolk and get their digestive system working to deal with the incoming food. It is only after it has absorbed the yolk that it pushes itself out. Just leave it alone, it may surprise you yet. Next time you may want to sit on your hands and not mess with it until it starts peeping frantically - they usually take a "break" after pipping to get that yolk absorbed.

:( it didn't make it :( this one just didn't act like any of the others that I've hatched. it just didn't act right. I really don't think it was going to make it either way. it just didn't seem right to me. it didn't seem lively.

But, maybe it was my fault because I didn't let it do its thing, but I only did it because it didn't seem like it was acting right. I didn't expect it to make it anyways. I"m saddened that it didn't make it. I hope it wasn't my fault. :( Maybe I will live with regret, that I didn't let it be.

So my hens hatch their own eggs, and I check on them, and they have been peeping for a solid 24 hours, but so far they haven't even cracked the shell. Usually by the time I hear peeping they crack the shell in a few hours, should I be concerned yet?

I am sorry it didn't make it, some just don't.

Please don't beat yourself up about it though, just a learning experience to let them be for longer than you think. I was told to leave all eggs alone until the 25th day of incubation. I had quite a few DIS and that saddened me, but I never even saw those pip. Sometimes the ones that don't make it out are because they are "defective" in some way, and shouldn't be born. I helped a few out because I thought they needed it and I ended up culling almost every one of them, some "culled" themselves when they failed to thrive and just keeled over, some had crooked beaks so bad they couldn't eat. I have learned (I hope) to leave them alone.. but the temptation to help is very strong. That is why I say "Sit on your hands".

The black one may have leg issues, I will have to see tomorrow and fix them if need be. It's doing a little star gazing and tipping over backwards too but i'm hoping it's just disoriented. It's sleeping peacefully with it's sibling now.

1. Is the broody a first time mommy?

2. The chicks can live off the yolk for 3 days - do not be concerned about it for another 2 days.

3. If they get stuck they get louder, and loud enough and the mommy will peck at the shell and start the process. Its why you see very few DIS chicks under broodies, they know exactly when to help and when not to - its instinctual.

Have you brought home any new chickens? Been around other people's chickens? Shows, swaps auctions you should shower change clothes, even feed stores you don't want to ware your same shoes into the coop. I hope Oxine works for you, great stuff to have around only need 1/8 tea per gallon spray your shoes with, and clean coop with.
