Well, most of the silkies are four to five months old now and the boys are acting like boys. White Flame made the tidbitting noise, but all he managed to attract was the two cockerels he was brooded with. He also grabbed on to the neck of Henrietta, the largest RIR and sat on her head. She's like five-six pounds and he's about two and a half. Needless to say she wasn't amused with his attempt to act dominate/mate/whatever he thought he was doing, so he got his fluffy butt handed to him. None of the boys seem to realize the hens don't want to have a thing to do with them right now. It's like watching a fifteen-year-old trying to put the moves on a college-age girl and getting shot down.

On another note, Professor Fluffles has started squatting around me. All my other squatters are laying, so I'm going to stay on the lookout for eggs from her. Plus Ella, the only laying silkie, starting squatting around people a couple of weeks before starting to lay. The Professor's coming up on six months old now, so I assume egg laying is probably not far behind. At least I'll have two silkie pullets! Probably Cottonball, too. Still don't know about Pinto the little rumpless splash. It's a tiny little thing with a nice, feminine crest that ignores all the other boys, just like the pullets do, but has largish wattles. With that weird looking vent it has, I'm hoping it's a boy. I don't want a pullet who's going to have trouble laying eggs. I got all these weirdo silkies -- Pinto's a mutant, Cottonball's a loner who wants nothing to do with anyone else even though nobody bullies her, Thunderhead still doesn't eat on his own, and Ella would have serious anxiety problems if she was human!

I wish they were quiet. I have four boys crowing now. The loudest is Tails the cochin who gives off a very clear "Cock-a-coo!" now and then throughout the day. Of the silkies Jazz has some volume on him even though he sounds hoarse. White Flame sounds like someone's strangling a cat, but he's very enthusiastic about it, chest puffed out, head held very high and a bit of wing flapping afterwards. Mystery's improving. He started out soft, but is getting less raspy. It gets pretty loud when all four of them decide to have a crow-off, and I have at least two more males who aren't crowing yet. Good thing my neighbor can't complain about the noise. His two ducks yell louder than any of my chickens.
