Silkie thread!

Are silkies reliable egg layers?

Get them! They are so sweet and silly! We have 12-ish silkies, sizzles, and smooth sizzles in our large flock of 40+ birds. They do fine in the large flock. Our top roo is a buff silkie named Shrek. He's even above a barnyard mix that 3x his size. The girls lay a few a week and take very good care of their eggs and nests. And if you ever want to hatch any eggs I've never seen a silkie hen refuse an egg you put in front of her. Plus, eggs are perfect size for bite sized hard boiled eggs. And, yes, they're only bantams. But! I have some from a breeder that are a variety of sizes. One little girl is tiny compared to her smooth sizzle boyfriend. :)

Sweet thank you. What day do silkie bantams normally hatch? I know for some breeds they hatch earlier than others.

Anywhere from day 18 onwards. I have my little Silkie on 10 large Wyandotte eggs. They make the best mums. No self respecting chicken keeper, should be without one or two or three...............

So... I have chicks I hatched. I have silkies who aren't broody and just started laying. Can I put the chicks with them, or will they not take care of them because they haven't gone broody yet?

Some Silkies are natural mommies and will take care of anything peeping you put in front of them, whether they are broody or not. Icelynn is one such bird. Others are not nice. My birds are not nice - and will attack chicks from other birds even when they are taking care of their own chicks. The non-broody ones will go after the broodie's chicks. You can try it, but be prepared to remove the chicks if they attack them.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Silkies. I love them. They are some of the sweetest birds and so funny.

Great news on the hatching eggs - let us know (and share pictures) when they come out to greet the world - it is Christmas for them.
