This chick thinks my dog is her momma....it is so sweet. My dog just lets her snuggle in.

I have a question. I am new to silkie genetics so please be easy on me but...I have a white roo and three hens White, Blue, and black. all my chicks that are hatching are yellow with a brown tint. What color will they be? They look almost buff colored but it's not a uniform color and I don't understand how that is even possible. Shouldn't I have a variety of colors?

Quote:

Quote: white X white = white

white X blue = 50% chance of having the blue gene; and no telling what else may be inherited from the white parent.

white X black = no telling what all might be inherited from the white parent

In the later two cases, ALL the colour and pattern genes can express, And how they mix together determine the appearance. But hcances are pretty good htat it will not be a recognized variety, or at last not one that is correct in all aspects.

In the first case, all chicks inherit two copies of white, turning OFF the ability to create plumage pigment, thus preventing the appearance of colours or patterns that are genetically present.

Hello Silkie lovers! I have a question. I have 4 white silkies, 3 of which I know are hens because they are laying. They are all 8 months old and hatched same day. The fourth one has not laid yet. The other 3 have been laying for over a month. She really looks like the rest. They are all bearded. Comb is maybe a tad wider and no wattles that I've seen. I don't think it's a roo, but why would she not be laying this long after the other 3? I'm puzzled.

They're going to want pictures.

I now have 7 silkies and a sizzle living in my laundry room. When I went out to feed this morning I discovered that during all this rain my coop has flooded. I dug a ditch to re direct the water, put a plastic pallet in and put hay on top of it, but they still haven't dried out and we are expecting freezing rain and snow tonight. I got two large cardboard boxes at the feed store and connected them by cutting a hole in the adjacent sides. I duck taped all the cracks and put pine shavings in and now I have house chickens.... At least these cant fly. Now to figure out what to do with the d'Uccle and Polish. I think the best thing to do would be move all the bantam into the barn and the turkeys into that house.

Oh no! Good luck. :)

I think I need an intervention. I can't stop taking pictures of these guys.

This was taken with my phone so It's not great, but I love the water circle lol.

I would like to intervene for you. KEEP TAKING PICTURES! It is really neat to review all the pictures when they are all growed up. You can see the subtle changes you didn't notice when you were watching them grow up but seeing a progression of pictures shows it really well. I thought I took a million pictures too, but I skipped a couple of weeks and there were changes I didn't notice until I looked at the older pictures - and realized they didn't look like that any more. The most subtle changes are going to be in the Partridge. Some of the Blues changed on me too - but the Blacks and Whites stayed the same. The other changes will be their tails and heads and beards.. and keep an eye out for any streamers.

The water circle is my fav picture too.

I am going to guess girl on the Partridge, I haven't seen any "stand tall" attitude from her at all.

Just get a backup hard-drive to store all the pictures.. you don't want to overload your computer

Thanks. :) I have a new laptop that has a ton of memory, so I should be okay lol. I am hoping all of these weekly pictures will help others later on with sexing their chicks. I hope the partridge is a girl. I think the little splash might be too. I am keeping the splash (needs a name), the Henley the partridge, Sheldon Cooper the littlest blue, Chance the black (pretty sure is a boy) and one or two of the whites. Other than the blacks, who I am pretty sure are boys due to giant combs compared to the others, I am iffy on sex. Their mommas have little round combs buried under their fluff so the babies may have inherited that. The oldest 2 are 7 weeks today, the other nine will be 6 weeks this coming weekend. Most of them have rounded crests, but the ones I suspect as being boys have slicked back crests.

I hope someone has some advice for me. I just want to figure out the best thing for my little silkies. Their broody hen decided to leave them tonight. They are eight weeks old so she has stayed with them longer than usual for her. This is her second brood for the year. She's a BA and a very good momma. We have a roost here in Georgia that is very nice but is outdoors, covered, sided, and dry. My chickens love it. I have not had any problems with the weather but I've also never had silkies before and also never had chicks this late in the year. Right now the silkies and their momma are in a makeshift box in the run with the rest of the chickens. They get to free range during the day. It's been raining and is going to be cold tomorrow. So tonight when I went out to lock them up for the night the silkies were on the ground right below the Momma. She was calling to them to get them to come with her. I like to just leave it all up to the broody to decide what to do but I couldn't just leave them there hollering. I was also worried about the weather being so bad and just putting them in the box alone so I put Momma in there with them and she stayed and all was well. At least for tonight. Sorry for the long story but I want you to have a good picture of what is happening. Will the 8 week old silkies be ok up on the roost next to the broody hen? Can they tolerate the cold well enough? They do fine with the other chickens. I find them to be spunky and smart in dealing with all the other chickens. I would love for them to be on the roost with the others. It's the best place for them. I want to be sure I don't put them up there if they might be too cold. They are already used to being outside. Thanks!

Since pictures are fun I am adding some I took a couple of days ago. I would love guesses on sex and type. They were all supposed to be the eggs of a buff silkie pen. (hahahaha) I can guess two of them are white.
