Silkie thread!

Hello All... we are picking up our Silkies next Wed 3/12. We are getting a Black & Splash... I have read until my eyes blur... and we are new to chickens. The goal is to get two pullets. We can't have roosters. I see this breed is very hard to sex.. any advice ? Pullets smaller than Cockerels ? ?????? We will be picking up other pullet breeds at the same time.

At 2 months old we were lucky to get a Black pullet from a breeder. We were unlucky to get 2 Partridges at 5 months with one turning out to be a roo and we just loved him but had to give him back when he started to crow and mount his sister! At 6 months I think you can guess fairly well which is the roo and which is the pullet especially in a flock. One at a time inspection is more difficult but in a flock there's a different stance the roos take and the girls kind of scuttle low to the ground in comparison. Also, the roos seem to get a more pronounced walnut comb. These are generalities but have worked for us in separating the girls from the boys.

How are the silkie roosters behavior compared to other breeds? Do they crow a lot??
I have some OEGB and the rooster is super loud.

Our little Partridge roo had a "repeat" button in his throat and crowed constantly - and there were no other roos in the neighborhood. Some owners say they're roos hardly ever crow or crow softly. Not our boy! We had to return him and it was very hard as he was such a LUV but we were not zoned for roos.

OMG that is too funny! Mine have been taking the easter eggs I have in the nest box and laying on them when I take out their own eggs. So funny!

That is funny. I had a broody that got a plastic egg stuck to her breast so that when my DH took her out of the box it dropped on the ground - for a second he thought she had layed an egg. The other broody was setting on a cucumber slice in her nest. They are a determined broody bunch!

We are picking up our little babies this WED.. I am a bit nervous as I am only getting two and really need them to be pullets. Someone told me to get a few more on the off chance they would be Roo's and I would be able to see them easy . Any last min thoughts as to what to compare them to ? I am getting them from a local place.

If you are getting chicks you won't be able to sex them. It's not safe to sex bantam chicks the way LF chicks can be sexed so you just may need to get a couple extra chicks to ensure getting pullets but be ready to find homes for the roos. You can't return chicks to a feed store the way you can return them to a breeder.

Hello silkie breeders

. I am fairly new to the bantam world, I had bantam Cochins for a while when I first got into chickens but have since migrated to LF breeds. I'm getting into Silkies and am wondering if there's anything special I need to consider when setting up breeding pens, watering, etc? Starting out I plan to keep them in an extra pen in my breeding coop, but this summer I plan to build an addition to my coop, so the sky's the limit (that sounds dangerous LOL).
I'm going to be raising Porcelains, so when I'm setting up breeding pens, do you only match Porcelains to Porcelains, or are there other acceptable varieties to mix porcelains with to achieve the desired offspring?

Thanks!!!

Don't know anything about Porcelains but there are some knowledgeable breeders about Silkies on this thread. Hope you let us know how your project goes.

I'm just going to bump this before it gets lost. Dont mean to be a pest, just trying to gather as much info as possible.
