Silkie thread!

We are brand new to chickens and have two Silkie chicks. Neither appears to be bearded. Would that be something that would be obvious by one week of age? Doesn't matter to me one bit as I like both looks but I am just curious.

Not always easy to tell at such a young age.
This one turned out to be bearded.

I read that silkies don't do well with pellets. That's what I've been feeding. I was wondering if its ok to try adding medicated chick start to try before I go buy a big bag of crumbles?

Hi all! I was looking through my fb newsfeed when I came across this:

"I have 12 hens and roosters, mostly silkies or sizzles with one cochin, looking for new homes. All have been raised in a petting farm and are under 3 years old. Friendly and healthy. The petting farm is no longer going to use chickens for the kids to hold so all need to find new homes in the next month or so. They are located about 45 min north of San Francisco. One of the silkies is egg crazy and she comes with her eggs shes been sitting on or if they've hatched then all her kids! All are free to good homes. No eating them."

Now I have been hoping for a broody and waiting for a local BYC friend to have a cull available for me so I took this as a sign that I was supposed to take home the broody silkie so I contacted the gal and now I am the future owner of Juliet and her brood:

I know very little about them other then the sweetness and the broodiness but am super excited. We are waiting for her to hatch her clutch and then I have to wait for a free weekend to pick them all up so it will be April 12th or 13th before I can bring them home. I don't know how many eggs she is sitting on or anything but to say that I am happy would be an understatement!
