I know Fancychooklady - it's frustrating but don't give up on us. We are all learning so much!

It's frustrating that so many silkies are having these issues. Some of this must be in the breeding. Line breeding to be more precise. In 10 years I've never had a case of wryneck. I've had a couple hatch with splayed leg and I'm ashamed to admit that my first little one died, but once I learnt how easy it is to fix I've never looked back. It's a pity you guys don't love Vegemite like us Aussies. A little bit in warm water poured over the food works wonders. It contains thiamine, riboflavin niacin B3 and folate. I use it in soups for an extra kick. There is so much information on this site, I bookmark the information that I may need later down the track.

X2 - we researched Silkies for 5 months and had a coop all ready with all the feed etc ready to go and then brought them home. And we still don't stop researching. We even research info on other breeds just for the knowledge because certain issues come up and gives you a base to monitor and/or diagnose your chickens' health.

Oh I plan to do the same, and I have been researching more since joining this sight I just had no idea how little I knew till I met you guys lol. I never had chicks or adult hens before. When I got my rooster growing up he was already 3+mths old so I never had to experience the baby stage and I never had hens. So this is new to me and I want to learn all I can about silkies. They truly are my favorite breed

Hey guys I have a question.....

I have received a beautiful splash/porcelin rooster from a friend. He's has a beautiful cult skull, leg feathers and everything. One problem is his beak is slightly crooked. Looks nothing like scissor beak and it doesn't effect eating or drinking... But he would make wonderful babies with my blue hen. But my hen hasn't got that beak problem. Will all her babies if I breed have that or not necessarily.

he was given to friend and was in horrid condition as he wasn't ever on grass and kept in cage. His brother is different color and has no beak problem.

I have a chick from her as well. Unrelated to the rooster. The bad think maybe is that bro and sis had babaies and their babies had some babies which gets me this chick.
its got barely noticable bottom beak slight off. Only notice if you hold her up close. She is 1 month. She's got a curled toe too. I hatched her myself with two other chicks who had no problems. If its hen I don't want to have chicks with this problem. But they would both give beautiful babies.

my flock includes
3 roos Ichabod, roman, silas(slight crooked beak )
2 hens. I blue and one splash
3 chicks.

got chi ks, splash hen, and partridge too from her flock.

Maybe i'll look at petco then and see if they have different light bulbs. I would love to find one of the red lights with the lower watt.

I got mine at Lowe's. That must have been missed when I said it last night, there were a lot of posts going back and forth.

I would not breed that rooster or the pullet with the crooked beak. She already has very weak genetics, and you can't be sure if the rooster has the same thine blood lines in his pedigree.

We are seeing a lot of problems with silkies, probably due to irresponsible breeding practices that don't ensure vigor in the progeny. Cross beak can be an incubation error, but it is more likely a genetic issue and it's not something I would be willing to risk in my breeding stock.

I tried to make my blue chick corrective shoes but I definitely need more practice and need to buy better supplies. She doesent want to even try to walk with them, and I swear it appears like one leg is always pulled in towards one side more making her just fall over on that side. She'll try to walk a little bit but just flops over. Its like one leg is going inward too much if that makes sense. And then all the toes look a little kinked, and wont stretch out on their own. Soo frustrating, cause im telling you this chick was PERFECT 3 days ago. Should I be giving it vitamin b seperately to help with the toes or is it getting what it needs already through the polyvisol?

not that i of havent found any eggs yet but the man i got them from said he thought the hens might be laying

its still rather warm for them, so you'll have to keep it pretty far away from them.

Its called mood lighting and this one is called passion.ask for the red flood lamp that's 90 watts. If they have 75 that would be better.

They probably have plain red incandescent bulbs there too. Do not get the one marked as a brooder lamp, it's coated with Teflon.
