Silkie thread!

If they are going to have puffy puffy cheeks and and a nice beard, they look like this when hatched. These are some from my past hatches.

Oh wait, this one is a rabbit...lol...
Oh my gosh they are sooo cute! Did dixie look like those? I have a couple of my babies who look pretty fluffy on top and on their cheeks almost like these but not quite so fluffy :) I got them from the sketchy breeder but at least their quality looks good. My guess is this black chick will have a little beard like her mom, though I have no idea if she'll get a decent crest or not. I really hope so :)

Actually, Dixie did not have a vaulted skull. She just puffed up real good. A lot of folks are staying away from the vaulted skulls..they often don't do well after hatching, just had that happen in my last silkie hatch. :( Very pretty baby.

City girl with 2 Plymouth Rock full grown girls as of yesterday and 8 baby chicks 5 days old we got on Tuesday. One black and one white silkie and of course sex not known. Three Bantams and not sure of the other 3. What a new fun happy experience this is gonna be! The two Plymouth girls each gave us an egg today too! We were not sure they would with the move. The owner was moving and had to

find a good home for them. I just put up a You Tube Video of them both.
I hope I am a good Mommie to them all!

I've heard this about the vaulted skulls, how some people still prefer them while others stay away and I understand why. I have two who have vaulted skulls who I seem to think will have the best crests and then two that are super fluffy but are not vaulted. And then there's the blue baby you gave me and my black baby that are just flat headed right now lol. Thats awesome to know that dixie has such a great crest without even being vaulted :) I bet my other babies could turn out pretty nice to then. I will have to take individual shots of all my other babies next and show you so you can see their quality and tell me what you think. They are all pretty fluffy except for like I said the black and the lil blue you gave me. I'll try to take more pics tomorrow or monday. They are getting so cute and fluffy now :)

Do you think its possible for my black chick to actually end up having a better crest then her mom? Or is it just genetic that whatever her mom has is pretty much what she'll be lucky to get.. ?

It sounds more like an internal thing. I had one with a much larger swelling it one side at the back end. More likely to mushy chick syndrome . Don't over feed those babies.

Fancychooklady - thank you so much for your feedback as this is another reference to save on my Desktop. It's so nice to get different perspectives from all you folks - both you with the posted problems and those with the possible solutions!

This approx 6 week old pullet, I'm saying its a pullet cause I think she is, came from my 3 year silver partridge project. She was born with the correct color & markings. I just want a confirmation that she is indeed a silver partridge...I finally think, I also have a couple of boys....I've been searching and couldn't find any breeding boys, so made my own...

Beautiful little Silver - will that be her name too? Sort of in commemoration of the silver partridge project! "Silver" will still fit if it turns out a boy.
