Silkie thread!

Nothing different with the breed. They are chickens too. :) It is quite possible that the little one came home sick. That pasty butt might be the culprit. Have you seen it go potty? I wouldn't be worrying too much about some type of harsh disease, they get beat up pretty hard at those feed stores, heck, before they even get there! They get it pretty rough during shipping. You were nice to take it in and try to help it. I've taken a few like that in, some make it, some don't. Good luck. I would personally just do the up first things..making sure it eats, drinks, and poops, and is warm enough. Make sure the others aren't picking on it. If it gets worse, separate it from the others. If you have any poly V. on hand..no iron, would be a thought. Just tiny drops..twice a day. They can get too much electrolytes, and too much Vitamins. When chicks start looking sick, so many folks start saying, give them this, give them that. A little for a few days, either it is working, or it isn't. Giving these things for a long period of time can be making things worse for the chick. :) We were talking egg yolk a while back for one chick. This is the time to give a chick some egg yolk. A little bit at a time. Just for a few days.
Thanks Cynthia! I have watched it eat, drink and go potty :) I haven't witnessed any bullying yet. I gave all the chicks some egg this afternoon. I put probiotics and electrolyte in the water but perhaps I should wash it out and just have some ACV in there. I guess only time will tell.

Question:

I want to get just a silkie and have one of our serama hens raise it, in theory could that work out?

I used DE when I had quail. They loved to dust themselves in it. I would hve to set it down quick and get away because it was a big dustball. they would all jump in and start rolling around and flapping. I've put it in the spots that my chickens have wollered out in the dirt to dust themselves. I didn't have good results as far as keeping pests away. I use sevin dust for a quick mite or lice treatment when I see them. It works. I'll give them a bath in Dawn dish liquid as soon as I can get a chance to wash it out of their feathers are kill any bugs that may still be on them. Dawn dish liquid is great to use to kill fleas on dogs or any animals really. As soon as it touches the flea or other bugs it kills them and the eggs. I always wash our animals in it then use whitner if needed.

As far as the VetRX. I have a cockerel that has had an eye issue since he was a week old and he is now outside after living in the house all winter. I found him standing away from his mother and other chicks and when I picked him up one of his eyes looked badly infected. Well after cleaning it with warm salt water to try to draw out the infection I discovered it was more of a plug over his eye. I was hoping it wasn't his eye. I worked on triyng to dislodge it still hoping it wasn't his eye I was taking out. Once I got the edges past his eye lid it popped right out. Thank goodness it wasn't his eye. So I got online and researched the symptoms and all pointed to eye worm. VetRX is suppose to kill the eye worm so I followed the instructions but it didn't work. I took him to the vet that I use for our dog and cat not knowing there was a vet that took care of poultry. He gave him a shot of Baytril and I gave him Baytril by mouth as well as eye drops. It cleared up some but his eye still waters alot and I have to clean it out about once a week. It's not as bad as it used to be. I have to get my vet bill paid before I add to it again. Since it's not an emergency he can wait a little while longer. I'm hoping it just stops all together. It is slowly getting better. We got a dog back that we let live with my bro n law because the road we live on dogs get killed all the time and we didn't want her killed so she was happy with him but he never took her to the vet or used any preventatives and she now has heart worms very bad and with her age and the amount of worms the vet said it would kill her to give her the normal treatment for heart worms so she has to take a pill everyday for about 2 years. That visit cost me over $200 to get her up to date on her vaccinations, microchipped and meds. She also has to take a pill once a week for incontinence. I'm still paying that bill off. I'm glad our vet lets people make payments is all I can say.

My chicken friend says she didn't see any results from DE as far as lice or even ants. After reading the warnings to wear goggles and a mask to keep out of your eyes and lungs, I decided if it wasn't safe for humans it certainly wasn't going to be safe for small chicken lungs either.

Dawn is a good liquid to use for greasy dirt removal. It is suggested by organic gardeners as a natural insecticide diluted and sprayed on veggie plants but I never saw results. I get better results killing tiny garden bugs with NEEM OIL organic. As far as shampoos I like using Baby Shampoo as it is gentle and does a bang up job in removing gunk from vent areas and gunkie feathered feet. As far as lice/mites we use organic (OMRI) Poultry Protector as a preventative treatment 1x month/ea chicken and spray the coop crevices and cracks at our once a month thorough cleanout times - directions on the bottle - not cheap but the preventative measure is worth it to us as we have not had lice/mites in the last 3 years - oh, except for one shipment order of two juvenile Ameraucanas that arrived with lice ON them already - we treated the poor things immediately with the Protector.

Boy, all those different worms are murder on livestock, poultry, and domestic pets. The eye worm is so gross - I watched a youtube video of the way someone squeezed out the eye worm out from the chicken's eye - big white puss-looking thing - So gross! I didn't realize that antibiotics could clear the eye worm - I always thought the worm actually had to be removed from behind the eye?

For worm treatments we use Ivermectin equine oral paste and my vet approves it in the proper dosage externally on the skin under the chickens' wings - we worm 3x/year.

Too sad about the heartworm pet. Such an easily preventable malady. My sister had to put her dog down because of being so ill from heartworm many years ago before it became a commonly preventable treatment.

We spent over $200 in 9 months on one Silkie alone - she has been our health problem child but just as spunky as can be. Every time we think we have to take her to the vet to put her down he treats her and she's back to being her sassy self again.

What is wrong with your silkie? Has he given you a diagnosis? About the eye worm, The vet looked in his eye and saw nothing then he put a drop of that dye that lets them see in the eye better and he still saw nothing. It hasn't gotten infected again since the first couple of times it just waters then it clumps up his feathers and they get stuck and sometimes to his eye so I check him everyday to see if it needs cleaned up. Today he had matted featers under his eye so tomorrow I'll bring him in and clean it up. He's such a good boy. I set him on the bathroom sink and run warm water and use a wet wash cloth to rub the feathers that are gunked up and if any is on his eye I hold the wash cloth soaking wet on it a few minutes and I can pull it right off. He lets me do it. He knows I"m helping him. I get it cleared up so it don't come back I plan to show him. He is beautiful. He is a red frizzled silkie. I would love to find some red girls to go in his pen.

only one of my chicks hatched on the 21 day which was yesterday and in the morning...none others have hatched yet and the eggs have no cracks on them now and its day 22

I had one hatch eight days past due date, if they don't hatch in the next couple days I would candle them the ones that look mostly dark with a air pocket on the end I would put back and give more time. Make sure your in the dark when you candle helps to see better. Best of luck.
