I have a couple questions about silkies. Do they roost? If so how far off the ground? Do they go ina nesting box when they lay eggs? How tall for that? Do you have to put them away every night? Mine do not walk up the ramp to the coop unless I put them on the ramp.

Mine are adults now and all of them sleep in a pile except the head hen who prefers to perch. I use milk crates as nest boxes and they use them. I just cut the side out so they could easily get in and out.

Okay all you silkie experts out there: Please give me your best guesses on sex of this 8 week old. Thanks!

My progress so far on my silkie coop.

What size wood are you using for your boards? Did you get the design online or making it up yourself? I really like it so far!

My little Seven is now an awkward teenager. Only she and 1 other have penciled primaries, the others are not, does that mean I have 2 girls and 3 boys?
Here is Seven as a day old...

And tonight at nearly 6 weeks.


Lol She looks so silly! What color partridge do you suppose she is? She was so light as a chick, and now look at her!

Sorry to change the subject, I just have a quick question. I heard a clicking noise coming out of the brooder box. When I checked to see what it was, I noticed my momma hen clicking her beak. She has a straight normal beak, but I think the end may be too long, because she seems to be getting her bottom beak stuck sideways, one side or the other, whenshe eats, and then clicks it back into place. Her top beak is quite curved, so Im thinking it mayneed trimmed. Any thoughts? I dont wantto start something I can undo by trimming it the wrong way or something. Thanks!!!

I trim a few of my chicken's beaks-just use toe nail clippers and take off the excess at the end so the beak lines up.

No i havent. Im torn about it. Im flattered they used it, but I would have liked to have been asked.

No wonder I liked the picture for this article so much! You always take the best photos. I saw this on FB and on their home page today. Sorry they didn't ask for permission though, that is a little strange. At least a head's up cause you may have missed seeing it.

you can feed her mashed up eggs to try to get her to grow more. (Maybe one a day)
Do you have a scale? You should weigh her every day to see if she's growing. Does she have food available to her at all times?

oh, that I have no idea. I have some that are big, almost as big as LF chick's when they hatch, and some are tiny.

What you weigh for is to make sure they are gaining over the course of a period of time and not losing or staying the same.

Well my partridge Silkie when she was a baby she only weighed 7/8 of a ounce. She stayed that weight for awhile and slowly gained compared to my other LF chicks that gained every day. I'm still hoping that she's actually a pullet! She's 7 weeks and I post a thread asking and some people said pullet and some said roo. It's driving me crazy! I'll have to get rid of her if she turns out to be a boy!!!!!!!

It is solely from my imagination no instructions here lol
The wood is 2"x4" and 2"x6". I did rip some of the 2"x4" and 2"x6" ti make 2"x2" & 2"x3"s.
I will be useing 5/8" plywood for the coop walls and will be useing shingles.
I just got done painting the outside frame and what will be any exsposed wood with two coats of brown simigloss paint. The coop will be white with some brown trim to pull it together.

Morning all

I'm still looking for some PQ Silkie hens for my boys and still have 2 white Silkie Roo's that need new homes. I'm in Indiana, subhanalah that is a very Pretty first blue egg, Awesome. Congrats.
