Silkie thread!

That's why mine get game bird starter/grower. I have quail and instead of buying two different kinds of starter I give it to all the chicks. I noticed the chicks were much heavier and grew better on it. Now I mix it in with the scratch I give all the birds even the adults.

What is the protein level in the game bird starter? Some of these products will give you short term benefits, but in the long run you will be setting your chicks up for visceral gout amongst other health issues in the future. Remember that most of theses feeds are specifically designed to grow birds big and fast for the table.
A good quality feed , specifically formulated for the appropriate age group isn't that difficult to find. If you have a mixed flock the calcium levels need to be kept below 2% with calcium carbonate on free take for layers.

Hi all. I have frizzled sizzles that I hatched from Sheri Mikner that will be 4 weeks old this thursday. 3 days ago one of them started shaking its head side to side like a bobble head doll after she would scratch her head or get excited (so not constantly). I started giving the Poly V thinking its wryneck. Yesterday I noticed another doing the exact same thing. I do have the emergency first aid kit from DOC Brown and started giving all my birds a mix of the Vita Por-B, A - Lyte Amino Acid, & Replman. There all vitamins and stuff that helps the chick absorb vitamins. Am I doing the right thing? Should I be doing something different?

There are several vitamin packs that are simply added to the water. Vitamin and minerals are added to feed but after only 2 months much of this is lost. So depending on how long the feed has been stored and outside factors such as humidity and moisture , I routinely add vits to the water.

I have a broody white silkie mama hen that sat on eggs forever and finally got 2 babies yesterday but then fire ants ate the new babies. I have the coop raised on blocks and everything so I don't know how the fire ants discovered them so quickly. Last I saw the babies were snuggled under mama's wings. I hate fire ants! (just venting)

Oh my that is so sad and just awful. I didn't realize that something like that could happen.

Im off work today so I kept her in the house with me while the kids were at school. I got all the pred. in her. She is some better than last night and this am. She can hold her head up. Its not completely straight and she looses her balance and starts thrashing. I can hold her in front of the water and she can drink on her own. She also took a couple of bites of food so I'm taking that as a good sign.

Thanks so much for helping me feel better! I think you probably don't have fire ants up there - you're lucky! We found we can keep them out of our (human) house by putting a line of dish soap along the door entrances of the house since they don't like to cross the sticky soap. I guess I could try putting the soap around the blocks the coop sits on, but not sure if it would hurt the birds if they try to drink it, and every time it rains I'd have to redo it, so not sure if it would work. I definitely need to try something though since I've even lost adult birds to the fire ants swarming before (luckily not recently).

So I was at my feed store this afternoon and this lady came in with a box of 6/ 6 month old Silkie Roosters.I picked one up out of the box and he totally relaxed in my arms. He was the coolest looking chicken! Needless to say...he came home with me. :-D I know nothing about Silkies but im already in love with this rooster. I was told he is a Blue Splash. Now im going to look for some Silkie Hens. I HAVE to have more of these! Here is his pic in his new coop.
