Silkie thread!

Oh thank god! I was soo worried! He is my breeding rooster and good quality and a sweet heart! He even raised his own bunch of chicks! The babies momma died just a few days after they hatched and my white rooster took them as his own and raised them all! lol

Oh wow that is so awesome. Yeah I would have been worried about him too.

I just recently hatched some silkies and I've never had silkies before. I have 1 chick who kinda has an attitude. It pecks my hand and face (if it gets close enough) just has an attitude. It almost reminds me of young roosters posturing. These chicks are at most a week and a half old. I don't know how to sex silkies (I don't want to hurt them). Is this a sign this chick is a rooster? Are the roos of this breed generally as easy going as the hens or do they have the typical rooster attitude? I've looked on different sites but keep getting mixed info!

They are so cute! Where did you get them? Gingy doesn't look as nice as Tika. It's funny how chickens can look nice and be nice, and look mean and be mean.

Thanks! I got them as week-old chicks at one of the local feed stores. Gingy used to be the sweetest little chick and for the longest time was my absolute favorite. He was friendly, cuddled regularly....and then he hit puberty and discovered girls.

He still greets me with great eagerness, but has no interest in being handled. He became aggressive with me for a while, but we worked through it and now he's very respectful of me, but an outstanding rooster when it comes to protecting the others. When my neighbor's chocolate lab found its way into my yard and ran up to the coop he flared up and made sounds that reminded me an awful lot of one of the dinosaurs in the movie, "Jurassic Park and scared it away. I was really impressed!

Tika still is very sweet and will even allow me to handle him, though he prefer to just hang out next to me while I pet "his" girl, Didi.

One of my roos was all attitude, and the other was a total snuggler...when they were chicks. Now that they're older they've switched roles. And my now very sweet and cuddly pullet was nothing but attitude when a chick. I guess that's my long-winded way to say that attitude isn't necessarily an indicator with Silkies.

so...I have a pullet who is 20 weeks...and I think she is going broody?! She hasn't even laid her first egg yet! Is it normal for them to be so broody so young?! I have to fight her to get the egg from on of the pullets (well hen i guess now) that are laying right now from that group, also 20 weeks....thoughts? Would it be okay to let her hatch some out being so young?

there should not be any lasting effects, if the fluid looked like thick water. it happens some times. its the equivalent to a baby spitting up due to abrupt movement.

curious about what shots you give? I give my silkies a bath about once a month. my one girl just got a bath but got some fermented feed juice all over her beard so she will be getting a second bath tomorrow lol.
