Silkie thread!

the best thing you could do is write one. but add photos of her own birds. like a scrap book with knowledge. complete with dictionary, photos of the different color variety, coop care how and what to feed, and when. a list of emergency responses. etc. etc. start it in a three inch binder so you and she can add more pages or volumes as needed. it's what i did for my little girl it was a huge success.

Hi all, wondering if anyone can help me with a few questions about my silkie mixes, not certain what they are mixed with and I've never had silkies before. I'm curious to know what their colors are called & what sex they might be? They are currently only 5 weeks old, so I understand that it is probably too early to be able to tell for sure, but feel free to guess.

The first one looks white, not sure what that black line is near it's eye and the other 2 are partridge. I'm gonna guess the white one is a girl and the others I'm assuming are 2 different birds are boys. At least the top pic of the partridge is a boy.

I guess it all just depends?

Ventilation is very important. We have gaps in the floor and our vents are up high. If the coop is drafty once the condensation builds up it will be moved around and settle on their combs . That is when you end up with frostbite . The ventilation also allows the ammonia rising from the urates in the poop to escape.
Getting the balance right can be tricky.

Thanks emvickery, the white silkie has black spots on its wing tips and by its eyes, have suspected female as well. The second chick is the same bird in both shots, just different angle of lighting, have guessed boy myself for this one. He is a blue grey color with the copper hackle feathers coming in. So this is called partridge? I have 2 other silkies, but the pictures wouldn't load earlier. Let's see if it will load now.

Sorry no full body shot on this one. Like the white bird it has darker wing tips. There is another one that is identical in color as the new picture, but it is half the size as the others, but is fluffy like the partridge one

I suspect that it is a blue with red leakage. Not partridge.

This one is a buff. I'm going to stick my neck out there and say it'a a girl. Kinda hard to tell without being able to really look at all aspects. I had a white pullet one time that I thought was a boy and others did too. Then she started laying eggs. That made it final.

This one here has some serious leakage. It just got poured right over his head. He came from a partridge roo and self blue hen. Their other offspring are black with gold leakage. They just got all leaked over.

The second one is the one I was referring to. Leakage is usually around the shoulder of hackle.
