hi Silkie people.
I need some help/advice from those of you who have much, much, much more experience than i have. I have a 4 month old silkie that I hatched from eggs from "Little Ameraucana Mom" here on BYC. This was included as an extra with an order of bantam cochin eggs. Her breeders are listed as Show Quality (now I know that does not mean mine is show quality, but should come from good stock.) I am not interested in showing, I just enjoy them in my yard. But i would appreciate any comments on its quality.
I would also really love some imput as to the sex of the chick. It is much easier for me to sex my cochins pretty early on, but I really don't know about this slikie.
I have someone who might be interested in it. If it is a little hen, I think I might like to keep her, but if it is a rpoo, I really have no use for him and he needs to go while I have someone willing to take him. (This person is actually looking for a roo.)
If i were to try to sell him, what would be reasonable to ask for him? (I would probably be happy with $10. Is that too much? not enough? or should I just give the roo away to a good home?)

Looks like a nice little Roo to me. He looks nice- nice topknot, nice beard, nice fluff, nice feet, nice comb, nice color...I see nothing wrong with him. He will look even better as he ages. You could get $25 for him from a serious breeder, but your friend may only want to pay $10. So it kind of depends on who is buying him.

ETA: in the 3rd pic- is that crossbeak? Or just a weird angle of the camera?

It is very hard to tell from the pics but my guess is a pullet!
There are many with much more experience than I have but this little one looks very much like my blind pullet. My "Honey" is almost4 months and I really believe is a pullet because she does not have any of the firm tail feathers. Have you heard any attempts at crowing yet? I do have a 4 month old roo that just started his first attempt at crowing this past week.

I agree with fattie....it looks to be a very nice little splash cockeral! In regards to crowing...mine never start until about 5/6 months old at the earliest. Cute!

Thanks for the help. There is no cross beak. I have not heard any crowing. There is a black bantam cochin in the pen with him (a hatch mate so same age) and he has been crowing for a while. I also have a LF cochin who is 9 months old (in anothoer coop) and I have still never heard a crow from him. He is huge and beautiful, but no crowing -- I'm not complaining.
there are no signs of wattles yet, but there is a visable (but very small) black thumb print of a comb. I don't think I've seen any stiff feathers in the tail yet (I didn't know to look for that). I have read others talking about "streamers" in the crest, and I'm not sure exactly what that means, but there does seem to be some feathers in the crest that are longer than others.

I have 2 little girls (6 and 3) and they love this chick. We call it our "bad-hair-day" chicken (afectionately). For their sakes, I would like to keep it, but I really can't have another roo running around the place.

The person interested in a roo is a BYC member who posted that they were looking for a Splash Roo for their BBS flock. I know that it can be dificult to re-home a roo and I thought this might be a chance to find a good home for it if it's a roo that I don't need and someone else does need.

If anyone else wants to chime in ....

Looks like a nice little splash roo to me. Last year, 75% of my hatches were roo's, so I actually "gave" quite a few away. My prospective breeder/show quality roo's start at $10 when they're just 2 mths old. You know~~Silkie roo's make good pets

I'm really new to silkies - just got my second hatch....My hubby loves them as much as I do...Here's pic of him after smuggling one into the house to cheer me up!

Had 8 hatch about 7 weeks ago and got blue, white and splash and may what would be considered a blue partridge...

Last night brought out a few more from the incubator, I really cannot tell the colors very well yet, but am so hoping for a black silkie!I have either blue and black or black...

So hopefully I have 20 silkies! and some white, blue, black and splash!!!
