i like it but i like to be able to stand while im cleaning so all tops would have to come off because im not crolling down the run for eggs that some deside they lay out side

good idea, I had not thought of that, so I think all the tops will be hinged , the design already allows for it so '' IT SHALL B DONE'' MUHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

I think that mod will come in handy

I would consider a single comb bird PQ. to me a bird that deserves to pass on its genes does not have any DQs. single comb is not something you want to try to breed out of your flock.

Once again, I think this is something that different breeders will view differently. And it really depends on how nice the OTHER birds in your flock are. If the bird with a single comb has better type or colouring, it may be worth using. If you have other birds just as good, who do not have the problems, it isn't. Comb-type like toes are pretty easy to work with and correct.

No, that is the way everyone I know uses it. Pet quality is not show or breeding worthy. Breeder quality is not show-worthy, but has redeeming features that make it useful for breeding. SQ is a bird who has no DQs, few defects and should fare well in competition. Exactly what traits make a bird one or the other can vary a bit, and different breeders have different preferences to which they give more weight.

An example, I have an EXCELLENT young partridge pullet in all areas except that she has 6 toes per foot. I also have a very typey, excellently coloured partridge cockerel who has only for toes per foot. They cannot be SQ as they both possess a DQ. However, those two traits mitigate each other, and they will likely parent some very nice offspring who will be SQ. I consider them BQ for that reason. Some would not consider them BQ due to the presence of DQs--allowing only for defects. Personally, toes are one of the easiest things to work with and correct. I'd much rather work with a bird who has bad toes than one who has bad wings or even worse, bad type.

I feel the same way about toes. What else can you cull for at hatch? Not much! I can pet out incorrect toes straight off.. not the same with off color in the hackle, poor wings, poor type, foot feather, etc etc etc.

Hello fellow silkie lovers.

Got a couple of questions for ya.

What is the average size bands (one with numbers) that your silkies wear. I want to band all of my silkies but unsure what size to order. My silkies do not free range so I was thinking if the band was a bit looser than tight it would be better since there wouldn't be anything for them to get it caught on being a bit looser.

Another thing I'm having a hard time finding is a plan for making a pullorum testing box from scratch vs buying one for $100+. That $100 will buy 10 bags of feed !!!

We just became certified testers and I'd like to donate my time to the local 4H group. Their original tester in the area has moved away.

Oh and doesn anyone know where the cheapest place is (shipping included as well) to get the bands? I''ll need several colors so and Qty's so the cheaper the better of course !!

Thanks Much

I use size 9 on my silkies.

Are you planning on banding the birds you pullorum test? If so, your better off with the Atlas Seal 305 bands. You can get them here http://www.nationalband.com/nbtpoult.htm You'll need an applicator also. Cheapest place i've found. Thats the kind of bands the NPIP testers put on the birds here in NY. I just placed an order with them this weekend, I got the atlas seal 305 adjustable bands, which can be adjusted to sizes 9, 11 and 13. Incase you have a thick male leg. And you can get them in 6 different colors.

I have used the plastic numbered bandettes on my silkies, but the numbers on last so long.

I have no idea on the sizes for chicks. I just use wing bands which can be put on young, 2-3 days old. I've been marking the buffs with a sharpie stripe down their back till I can wing band and the other colored birds get toe punched at hatch (since sharpies wont show up on the blue or black chicks), then wing band a couple days later. Plus, the chicks grow so fast i'd have to be checking their bands daily to make sure they don't grow into the leg.
