I don't have Silkies yet, but its not for lack of trying!
I recently bought some stackable bins, the kind they sell in Lowes or hardward stores for things you want to be able to see and be able to reach into.
They are about14 inches wide 10 in. tall and 10 inches deep. Plastic and the feet fit into holes on the sides for stacking. The fronts have a solid wall about 1/4 the way up so shavings & things won't fall out. I have 3 stacked up in my largest Marans pen, and they us all three. I can see into them so I don't have to rummage around looking for eggs, I can tell if there are any without bending down.
I used to use totes, but with advancing age,
didn't like to have to bend down & stick my arm into the tote to feel for eggs, or take the tops off. They would also roost on them at nighjt so the tops were always yucky.
The bins are nice because due to the holes for the feet, you can tie them to the wall for security so they don't fall over. In my small breeder coops, I put one on a raised platform about 3 feet high. Yes, some of the birds, epecially the Ameraucanas roost inside the top one, but keep the bottom ones clean. And if you do nest one ontop of the other, the bottom one has a top provided by the floor of the upper one, so the birds have a choice of a covered box or an open one.,
They are only $7+ at Lowes, a bargin I think.
