Silkie thread!

I'm in KY. and it gets very hot here. All of my chickens do some panting from time to time but I have not noticed the silkies panting any more that the others.

I use shallow pans of water for them to stand in to pull some of the heat off their bodies. They also get mud puddles to play in during the day to help relieve some of the heat stress. There are fans in the coop and a dehumidifier that I run at night when the humidity is pegged.

Suze, when I saw this I looked at Hutt but didn't find any references to it. Of course they don't make it easy to look something like this up and it might be there but so far I haven't found any reference to it.

Wondering what everybody sells baby chicks for, no dq's. Around 3 days old.

I have a big batch of 24 buff eggs available, but if nobody wants them i'll be putting them in the incubator and was thinking about offering some on craigslist.

I sell day old culls for about $5 a chick (missing a toe, single comb, etc).

Did you cut the webbing? Never seen anything like it, but you could peruse Hutt and see if he mentions anything. http://chla.library.cornell.edu/cgi...node=2837819:5&frm=frameset&view=image&seq=60

I just got 4 silkies (they are about 8 weeks) from a hatchery as I ordered them with some layers and one has a deformed middle toe although she seems to get around great now and one black that is missing the toe nails from the outer most toe (feathered toe)
I figured they were heavily inbred. I wont breed them just have as pets.

Our feed store sells hatchery chicks for unbelievably cheap. But part of me thinks it's because they are like goldfish, the store actually makes it's money by selling all the other things to go with them.

They go for $3.00 or less I believe, tho' I would have happily paid more for them. BUT, that said, it seems there are always people looking for silkies and it also seems that chicks get much harder to find a little later in the summer. So many of us, who keep our silkies as pets (and sunnyside-up egg layers), are perfectly happy with our lesser quality silkies (though I confess, after meeting Jen ('ULTASOL') at a Washington show, and purchasing a couple of higher quality Silkies, I've become a bit more discerning

I have listed some juveniles in the Buy/Sell/Auction section. Obviously it's too hot to ship right now but we will be heading up to the Hendersonville, NC area this Thursday and can meet folks along the way. Alternately, they could be picked up in NC either Friday or Saturday. We will be heading back on Sunday.

We go up I-95 to I-26 and then over to Hendersonville.
