Good Luck. I hatched a few from her last year and ended up keeping a really nice pullet.

Does anyone know what type of silkies Meyer Hatchery has? Idk if they have bearded or non bearded. I wrote to them to find out, Just didnt know if anyone else knew.

my silkies are starting to finally fill out with some flesh on them, but the feathers (possibly from plucking from other hens), are starting to look like DR. Seuss characters. i can see their eyes though!!! so thats one good thing, right? they dont look distressed at all, actually more settled, but havent found any eggs under them recently (these eggs were light blueish tinted, but the silkie eggs i remember seeing on line were dark..). one today and last night, i noticed was fussing with my bantam game hen, over the huge dummy egg in one of the nest boxes (its so adorable to see them try to waddle the egg away like a little soccer ball). lol

Breshcandra, your pullet looks lovely.

For the silkie experts: I have a question also about my cockerel, "Roy". In the last month or so he has really filled out but also seems to have a hard time keeping his balance as of late. I am not sure if it's purely mechanical or if he may have been injured while living in my bachelor coop (he's now living separately). He has the best crest of my males, great feet, and I think nice type -- but right now I don't know if he could breed! He is built differently than the cockerel discussed on page 579 - his head isn't too far back, rather I think he may be too wide.

Here is Roy.

Hold them up so that you are both at eye level with each other. If you can see their eyes, they can see, if not, use baby nail scissors and trim muff and/or crest feathers just enough so that you can see their eyes.

If you trim or pluck will it grow back? I have a few with lg topnots and would prob benefit from a trim

The Lisser~~ just speaking from my personal experience, and everyone's experiences are different, I've found that some of the cockerels that are closest to perfection (per the SOP) have difficulties breeding; related to their short backs and wide chests.

If he's having trouble keeping his balance, I'd probably check him over thoroughly for parasites.
Beautiful boy

Thanks, huckleberry farm and Bat Cave Silkies - re the parasites - I have been battling mites lately. They popped up suddenly. I've treated all the silkies with pour-on Ivermectin, and used permithrin and sevin on the coops, twice, and still can't get rid of the bugs!! That's one reason Roy is in the "infirmary". He is eating great and crows . . . and I don't see many mites on him, but can't seem to totally eliminate them. Could mites cause his unbalance?

Thanks!!
