Silkie thread!

They get locked up at night but they are definitely at risk during the day. Definitely not the best situation. I haven't lost a chicken to a preditor in many years but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. My reasoning with these boys is at least I can give them the happiest of lives for a time. Cull roosters have very little positive outlooks for the future. I really don't know what the best solution is. I've had them on craigslist for months.
Oh, I wasn't knocking you for free ranging!! NO way! :) Sounds like those little guys are probably pretty darned happy to have the run of the place. I was just curious, is all. So many of the people i know just have much safer areas they live in. I think because of the open prairie out here, I just have a bad set up for free range. I use a lot of chicken wire for day time and everyone is locked up at night. I have chain link fencing for my main coop. I sure wish I could let everyone have the run of the yard and not have to worry about my neighbors dogs. (hate their dogs!) They are a 1/4 mile down and they come "hunt" over here almost daily. Dog=0 ... I'm pretty careful with my birds, they haven't gotten anything.

No sure why they look purple probaly because my phone has a weird flash? Hmmm a purple silkie, LOVE IT!

Hard to tell by the pictures, do they have a purple or a green sheen to their colors? Part their fluff down to the skin, what color is that under feathering? if it is really dark - black, if its much lighter slate blue then they are blues

They to have some green and purple tints. I took pics of all their underfeathers.
#1 my roo, he also has white/silver leakage on neck.

Blues can have green sheen also, but I believe it's not desirable.

yes you can get the green sheen on blue, especially dark blue and the tails of blue boys especially. because of the color of the underfluff I want to say they are actually dark blues probably from blueXblack breedings. Really the best way to tell is breed them and if you get all dark babies - they are black, if you get light blue, and splash chicks you know they are blue

I could be wrong but the wings look a bit down/not tight...or is it the pic?

Hey all, sorry in but into this thread but had a few pictures of a Buff Silkie Cockerel and would like to get the different opinions about him. He obviously has some black smutt in his tail, but he is clear elswhere and has great wings. Im not expert on Silkies, and only recognize certain things that someone who "specializes" in this breed might not miss. These pics were taken in the 17th and he was hatched on 8-29. Looking for the good the bad and the ugly about this bird, although he will eventually be sold.

This pic of his feet were taken a few months back, but they give you an idea what they look like.

Again, any advice given is much appreciated. Thanks.

Awww....that sucks. I figured folks would want silkies even if they are roos. Good that you give them a great life, however
long that may be....
My dogs eat a species appropriate diet so I guess I know what will (should) happen to my culls. Note I have a three month
old with a crooked beak still here...;-)
I seriously doubt that beak will straighten out haha. Just can't bring myself to do it. She's super sweet (I'm guessing she) so
I'm sure I will be able to find her a pet home. Save the hard culling for the ones that act like "regular chickens".
