Silkie thread!

My mom just figured out that if you play with a Silkie chicks tail, they'll shake it. She's over on the couch, messing with poor little Abbi's tail lol

OIC. Ok, I know about the genetics behind the blue/ black/splash, but what are the genetics behind the paints?

This would be a good question for Sonoran-- kind of our genetics guru.. or even Scared. :) NO idea. But I do know that you still may not throw paints even if you have them. I've bred horses and I have many friends that are BIG into breeding. I'm into Paints (horses)-- and just because you have a Paint over Paint-- does not mean you will get Paint.

Anyone know how 2 roos would be together? Am I just asking for trouble?

I've always had good luck keeping several roosters together. Then again, they all grew up together, that seems to make a difference.
I recently moved and took my chickens with me. My silkies moved in a pen with the farms silkies. I brought one rooster, the farm already had a rooster, they had a little bit of an argument but now they're all getting along just great.
I think if you have enough hens and space they're less likely to fight. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

thank you!

Thanks! Yeah, it's already really dark and gloomy here today. It's sprinkled off and on, but it still looks like we're in for it later on this afternoon/evening. They are still predicting tornados for our area. They typically don't like to give predictions that early, but it's been just right for that kind of weather. We had gotten warm, and then had a cold front pull thru the last week. Then we got really warm... and now this front is coming in. Unfortunately, that's going to be a bad mix, and perfect conditions. I hope this all passes over with not much action. But we're already prepared for it just in case. Since we're in Kansas, practically everyone here has a basement... but the people in Oklahoma don't build basements under their homes (the ground is not conducive to it) and so it's going to be a lot more dangerous for them if they have to run outside to a cellar. Thank you for thinking of us! There's only been one time it was so serious that I opened up all the gates to the pastures so the large animals could escape if they needed to. Caught them all up later.
Praying you all are safe!!

You will have to take my word that this chick is white because the black skin showing thru and the flash are changing it's color. It is all white except for two black spots that just started to come in about four days ago. I have both parents and they are blue. The chick is 3 weeks.

Oh Peep!!SO cute!!!! Any chance there is paint behind the blue somewhere?

Thank you so much. I don't know if they have ALWAYS been together. I just got them both last weekend and so far they are buddies. Now, I know that may all change once they get interested in the girlies. I love them both so I want to be able to keep them. One is the paint I posted and the other is a black.

Here is my white-with-spots baby, 9 weeks old. I was thinking she is a splash...is this splash or paint??
LOL my Blue Andalusian Dora photo bombs a lot of my chicken pics...she wanted to be in that second one :D

Honestly paint is a color that is not understood too well at all. It is a project color and it is a literal wild card with breeding. I don't know much about the paints, but what I do know is this : you can breed 2 VISIBLE paints (showing the obvious spots) OR a visible paint X a solid paint (a bird thats another color but out of paint parents) and you still can get 50/50 or 25% paint and 75% other/solid colored offspring. Most seem to try to breed black to paints to improve the black spotting and clear up the pigment holes (paints seem to have a problem of pigmentation of the black skin where some skin spots even eyes will be white or yellow) ... Paints throw all sorts of colors depending on what you breed to. I do know someone who is getting 80% spotted/visible babies out of her paint pen, while I know others who are getting 25% spotted babies and the rest are solid colors (white, black, blue mainly)
