Silkie thread!

Quote: Jenny laid a new egg so now there are 6 eggs total in the basket. I put the date on the new one since she got up to eat...will she continue to lay more eggs ? know they can sit on atleast 10...peaches by the way is sitting by the basket watching the eggs now that henny is out....

It would be just my luck... So if by chance anything hatches i'm expecting small plymonths? Normal feathers right?
And with nugget being a sizzle with silkie feathers I'd get fuzzy silkie feathers?

How many fertizle eggs with they lay? When will I be able to eat eggs again lol

Apart of me is thinking to go out and buy an incubator and set them just to see... I'm so anxious to know.... But just worry bout them laying more that would then have to be incubated too... Suggestions ?
I don't know how you guys who hatch eggs do it .... So much time to wait lol I can already see myself pulling my hair out anticipation .
It could be worse, look up incubation time for emu.

Once they go broody and start setting, they will not lay until after they finish raising their clutch: 3 weeks of brooding, then another 4-6 weeks of raising the chicklets.

Type will be inbetween that of rocks and silkies, probably softer, fuller feathers, but not silkied. The rocks are barred? If so, all barred offspring will be males.

Lol I'll tell myself that every time I find myself to anxious

Nugget laid another egg today which suprised me since she was laying everyother day and she laid yesterday... So got 3 of her eggs and 4of hennys .... O yeah and she took over the nest when henny was out eatting... I also found some of her feathers in the basket.... Sign of going broody?

O about the barring... My Plymouth hen is a barred... So if any of her chicks if they hatch are barred they are boys if I understand correctly? Why is that may I ask?

The barring gene is sex-linked. A hen only has the place to carry one copy; a rooster has places to carry two. The hen passes on the lack of a place for a second gene to her daughters, and the barring gene to her sons. The rooster passes barring to all its offspring. Since only the hen was barred, only the sons will receive that barring gene.

That makes perfect sense now.. thanks :) As far as coloring any ideas? Peaches is buff... And coloring & feather for peaches and nugget? Will they get the silkie feathers since she has them? They are both buff so will majority of them be buff? Ooo and thanks again gor answering all my questions... not sure where i'd be without you guys :)

Silkie is recessive, so both parents must provide a copy to offspring. If only one parent provides a copy, they will not be silkie feathered, but will be split to silkie feathering, and about half their offspring will receive a copy of the gene.

buff X buff = buff

Well, I'll have to see how my other chicks turn out in a couple of days-- but this one that hatched yesterday does not have brachydactyly!! I'm really excited about that! So I guess my pairing may be okay after all? But I guess I'll have to see how the rest of their offspring turn out and what happens with them. Also, this chick had all toes, all toenails AND no fused toes with fairly decent spacing on them. I'm feeling a lot better about my birds I'm using to breed with now... but it's only one chick. I'll be anxious to see how the others turn out. OH the down side is that this chick has really so/so foot feathering. That's really too bad, because everything else was looking so good on it. I'm really bummed about the feathering. Sigh. It's always something, isn't it?

How common is split wing? I am worrying over wings, it looks as if several of mine DO have split wing. Most of what
I hatched back in November. I have poured over the images of split wing on the ASBC but still am unsure. I'm not sure
if it is split, or just some missing feathers. I guess I need to shoot the wings and post them.

Is it something you can work on with the next generation? I mean, if everything else looks good.

Yeah, and I have eggs from another breeder in my incubator right now. If they turn out okay-- and my own chicks from my own birds are okay-- my plan is to use them together so I don't inbreed and I can hopefully get the better feathering, etc. Just have to see how it all pans out. I just don't have any idea of what my birds are really producing since I've only hatched 2 chicks and it's kind of a crap shoot to guess at this point! LOL

[it's official... Peaches is a Roo!

Still no crow but I saw him do a roo dance and try to mate nugget.... So now not only do I have a male duck ( rain) trying to mate my girl duck ( sunny)
I have possible chicks on the way.... O lordy lord...

Question... Should I leave the eggs in the basket? I figured it would promote them to sit on them... But I worry that the girls or the ducks will knock em out and have possible breakage....

Other question: how many eggs should I allow them to sit on...? Know silikies can sit on 8-10 right? Think I read somewhere a plymouth ca sit on 10-15. But I'm not to sure.

Right now both girls are sharing a basket... Been trying to get them to lay in separate ones but for some reason they insist on using the same one. Soi hope to be able to divide the eggs and into two and have both of them sit...
Just waiting to see when they will stop laying..

Crossing my fingers....

I didn't think it was really that common. You'll have to post pictures. Spread the wing out completely.

Sorry about the roo. I've been lost on this "basket" thing... are you calling the nest box a basket, or is there where you are collecting your eggs? I haven't responded, since I had no clue! LOL And if you are leaving eggs out for the hopes that a bird will go broody-- that is a BAD idea!! First of all, you can create egg eaters by leaving eggs out. I would never leave an egg out. I collect them ASAP. If you are hoping someone will go broody, get golf balls or buy the faux eggs online to put in the nest. If an egg breaks and the chickens eat it-- they will start to break into the other eggs and before you know it, you'll have eggs eaten and gone before you can even get out there. Not only that, but the sight of eggs won't make a bird go broody. They just go broody or they don't all on their own time. You'll know it when they do, though! It will look like a massacre happened in the nest box! They will sit in there and they will pluck off all their chest feathers and there will be little fluffy feathers everywhere! And even if there are no eggs in the box-- once they go broody, they are there to stay. After they sit on nothing for a good couple of days, THEN I'd go ahead and stick eggs under them. I left my broody sitting on nothing but chips for a week because she kept getting up and I wasn't sure she'd stick it out.
