Silkie thread!

I am loving all of these pictures! It's making it even harder to wait for my hatch! I am excited to see what hatches.

I got 4 white, 3 splash, 2 blue, 2 buff, 2 cuckoo, 1 porcelain, 1 black.

I was hoping for more black but I will be happy with any that hatch at this point.

Day 4 and counting!

How long before they grow back? My poor Roger got attacked by a hawk today, and he survived it. BUT is scalped pretty good as you can see... Should I neosporin him? The only places that seem to have bloody spots are on his walnut... everything else is just raw. I am afraid to blu-kote him since its so close to the eyes... What ya'll think would be the best plan of action. This guy put up on hell of a fight.
Awww! Poor guy!! Not sure what would be best. Hopefully someone else can help.

I am going to put the antibiotic ointment on... real thin... and keep him confined to the dog carrier over night...

My little boy is going to be so upset when he gets home.. He loves Roger big time.

I had a Barred Rock hen survive a hawk attack a few years ago. I used polysporin on the wounds and fed her hard boiled egg for a few days to bump up her protein/nutrition. She healed just fine but had a pretty serious case of arthritis (her wounds were to her legs and torso.) Her feathers didn't come back until she naturally moulted which was some MANY months later ....

Good luck with Roger!!

If it scalped the skin it may never grow back, but it doesn't look that bad - I'd say it start growing back soon but won't look anything close to 'normal' for quite a few months.

Antibiotic ointment - thin. You should probably keep him seperated for a few days until it scabs up, you can put him in the crate in the pen with his ladies during the day, but wouldn't let him loose with them because they will want to peck his head while its freshly wounded/ You can try blue kote on a cotton swab or piece of cloth (would definitely wear gloves) and dab it on his wounded areas, should help keep it to one area and out of his eyes.

Also agree on supplementing him with eggs, electrolytes in water (or even just sugar) for a couple days - keep him boosted to speed up healing and get over the stress of the attack.

Im not sure if this is an option, but on monday if he still has open wounds you could find antibiotic opthalmic ointment, and then you wouldn't have to worry about getting it in his eyes. They make a gentamycin ointment. I am not a DVM. I deal in humans ;)

Instead of posting my coop photos again in here. I will give you the thread! There is some funny pics of silkies in there!
