I wash a day before a show. They aren't ready to show until about 5-6 months old-- sometimes older until they fill out. Mine do fine with it. They like the blow out/fluff afterwards the best, though.
I was taught you aren't supposed to wash your chickens a day before fair but rather 3 or so days so that the natural oil in their feathers can spread and give them a nice shine.

Did she ship thru the mail? When I get a shipped bird, I give them sugar water and electrolytes. Often, I've had to syringe it down them, too, if they refuse. Those first hours are so critical. Anyway, again, I'm very sorry about your bird.
