Silkie thread!

I wash a day before a show. They aren't ready to show until about 5-6 months old-- sometimes older until they fill out. Mine do fine with it. They like the blow out/fluff afterwards the best, though.

I was taught you aren't supposed to wash your chickens a day before fair but rather 3 or so days so that the natural oil in their feathers can spread and give them a nice shine.

That's for "normal" chickens.

I am in need of some help....Last fall I hatched out 19 chicks with no problem and they grew up well.

This spring, I've had terrible luck, not with the hatchv, but after....I'm having a hard time with pasty butt....They are inthe same brooder, witih 21 per center chick starter...I was using last fall 26% game bird starter. Do they need that extra protein? I'm stumped and tired of losing my silkie chicks...any advice? I am thinking of putting them on a wire floor, I'm suspicious they are eating the shavings.

I would also like to know about protien and what you all are feeding your silkies. AND at what around what age can you tell sex of them? When the boys crow? :)

I let my silkies free range today(of course keeping a very close eye on them) and I ended up taking way to many pictures so I just have to share!!

Here are my 3 month olds(I'm not sure how old the white silkies are but I'm pretty sure they're around the same age.)By the way I don't know the gender of them but I think they're all girls??

Speaking of moms I have 3 broody hens and surprisingly none are silkies, but one is a silkie mix. I tried to put eggs from my blue pair under them but the pullets not laying very well(just started laying). Also, I'm going to a show next weekend and I'm bringing 1 blue pullet, 2 white cockerels, and 1 buff cockerel(all silkies).

So cute, I think one might have looked a little roosish but it was a far away pic, the buff one but for the most part they all look girly.

Oh no! That is so terribly sad about losing your Paint. :( Did she ship thru the mail? When I get a shipped bird, I give them sugar water and electrolytes. Often, I've had to syringe it down them, too, if they refuse. Those first hours are so critical. Anyway, again, I'm very sorry about your bird.

All beautiful silkies! Really enjoyed all the pictures!

I need your help, silkie gurus! What color is this boy (other than black and white)? He came from a black/lav split egg.

I've been calling him an Oreo, but I'm pretty sure that's not a recognized color.
