Congrats on your chicks! Don't worry about a little bit of blood. He must have hatched too fast or wasn't quite ready when he came out.Ok...my last chickie hatched!!Another cone head...and all four of them are white!
This one still had some goo at the bottom and when it came out it started bleeding from the umbilical cord site. I put some styptic powder on it asap and it has stopped, but is there something else I should do? Though it is getting up, sitting and peeping nicely, I'm still a little concerned.![]()

Yeah, they usually don't poop too soon after hatching. What do you mean it's down is stuck to it? Can you post a picture? Is this a sticky chick??? Sticky chicks don't usually make it out on their own. And if they do, they often have a lot of problems. If the sticky down is interfering with his movements, you're going to have to wash him. I do this with sticky chicks immediately. I run warm water-- check it several times to be sure it's warm enough-- but not too hot. Then put the chick under and use cotton balls and my fingers to rub off all the stick. Then put them back into the incubator to dry off. Don't air dry them! But I can't tell what problem you are having without a picture. And so my advice could change depending on what I see.Ohhh, my last little chick that had the goo and bleeding, now just had a large watery light green poop. Not too water, but large for a baby....and so soon after hatch. I'm really worried about it. I gave it a little drop of poly vi sol...just don't know what to do. Its down is stuck to it and crusty......what can I do? Do I need to separate it? I hope someone is on here at this time of night...
Thanks in advance,
TinaLou
I would go with Polish, as they have the right attitude and won't pick on others. I don't have experience with the Jap Bantams. Since they are not crested, I would not combine them with a nice silkie flock. Crested flocks usually always go together really well. If you go with a non crested bird, they could pick on your others because they can see really well. I raise WCB Polish and they are insecure and very docile. A bit flighty, but they do calm down the more you handle them, and most of all, they are laid back and don't go after each other. So that would be my two cents.I was thinking about adding a couple of other Bantam breeds to my flock. I currently only raise Silkies. What does everyone think of Japanese bantams or bantam polish laced? I've been interested in those breeds, but want to make sure they will get along with my little Silkies. Here is a few pics of them!!![]()

I think mine would have bled a lot more if I hadn't been in there watching it hatch. It was coming out pretty good. Hopefully, all will be ok.
Thank you! I will have the pretty pics tomorrow...they are still being foo fooed!!![]()
Now, to watch them sprout like weeds!!
