Silkie thread!

My good friend gave me her flock because she is moving oversea, so I ended up with several silkies and 1 chick brahma. I had on my own 1 four months old and another 2 months old silkie as well. She had all of them in one coop but the coop is divided, so she had in one side 1 roo, and 3 hens that are 4 months old , and 2 two months silkies plus 1 two weeks old brahma in the other side. My plan was to un divide the coop, that they can be all together. However, I had to put them in my provisional coop until I can set up their permanent coop/run. This morning the poor baby brahma was bleeding and pecked by the roo and all the big girls, it was bad. After removing her, I witness the big silkies pecking on the little ones. Therefore I ended up separating the little ones and put them in the coop and leaving the big on the run. My friend suggested to wait 2 days and introducing one hen at a time and finishing with the roo. What do you guys think? Is it enough time or should I wait longer? Should I buy some pinless peepers? I feel bad for the big guys because they sleep in the run but I don't want to experience that pecking again. The little brahma grows so fast too, so hopefully she will know how to defend herself soon. Any advices will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
.... and adding them, to your main population, at night. It is weird but if they are siddled up, all night, to the new bird they- generally- accept it in the morning. You could do this one/two birds at a time and wait until the baby is bigger in size, to add.

Sheila :)

Sheila :) GOOD plan. I especially agree with the nightime addition.

I found 2 Silkie eggs about 30 mins apart, in the same place. Which do you think is more likely...
A. My silkie laid an egg late last night under cover of darkness and I missed it while checking both last night and this morning
B. I have a first time layer (4.5 months old)
C. She laid two eggs in one day

Im thinking A but I wish B or C were true.. Especially B. I need to know if I have boys or girls.

After my girls having been laying for a week or so their eggs look pretty much identical in color and shape. I have five silkie layers and I can tell all the eggs apart. The first few times they lay the eggs change in shape and color.

Thank you guys, i really appreciate your input. I was planning to do it at night starting tomorrow, but i was thinking adding one big girl at a time to the little girls, not the opposite, is this still a bad idea?
Saturday my other flock is finally moving out of their brooder to their permanent coop, so I might use their old brooder for the silkies and baby brahma and separate them with some hardware cloth like Aoxa suggested. I just hope it works!

I wouldn't use hardware cloth. That stuff is way too expensive. Especially when it's inside the coop. It's not helping against predators, so just use something cheaper. I use this green fencing to prevent birds from getting to one another.

ETA: And by helping against predators, I just mean inside the coop for separation between the birds. It helps if you have a run with hardware cloth for sure. Only predators I worry about are my standard free ranging roosters getting at my poor silkie rooster Steve. The two groups don't get along. I let the silkies out to free range with supervision last night and sprayed my roo Jagger (barred rock) anytime he got close to Steve. Steve and I are super tight. lol

What color do you think this silkie chick is? It could of came from a black, blue or cuckoo hen and the roo was either blue or black.
I had 2 chicks hatch very similar to yours.

This one here is only a couple of days old now.

This one was about a day old in this picture.

And this little lady turned out looking like this. Then someone went and gave her away with a bunch of other chicks that were going to a new home. This chick was the only one I had planned on keeping but someone mistakenly gave her away anyway.

Dad looks like this.

I'm pretty sure both chicks will look close to my rooster when they're all grown up. Chances are, yours might too.

Someone who might know better, correct me if I'm wrong!
