Silkie thread!

My good friend gave me her flock because she is moving oversea, so I ended up with several silkies and 1 chick brahma. I had on my own 1 four months old and another 2 months old silkie as well. She had all of them in one coop but the coop is divided, so she had in one side 1 roo, and 3 hens that are 4 months old , and 2 two months silkies plus 1 two weeks old brahma in the other side. My plan was to un divide the coop, that they can be all together. However, I had to put them in my provisional coop until I can set up their permanent coop/run. This morning the poor baby brahma was bleeding and pecked by the roo and all the big girls, it was bad. After removing her, I witness the big silkies pecking on the little ones. Therefore I ended up separating the little ones and put them in the coop and leaving the big on the run. My friend suggested to wait 2 days and introducing one hen at a time and finishing with the roo. What do you guys think? Is it enough time or should I wait longer? Should I buy some pinless peepers? I feel bad for the big guys because they sleep in the run but I don't want to experience that pecking again. The little brahma grows so fast too, so hopefully she will know how to defend herself soon. Any advices will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Adding new birds to an established flock is always tricky. With large fowl I have always had good luck with adding at least three new birds (usually hens) to an established flock. But when adding younger birds to a mixed group of a few birds of a simular age I have not had much problems. These additions included silkies and polish. My last addition to this group of youngsters introduced a problem. The bird is a black ameraucan bantam in the same age range. She has picked the feather off of the backs of some hens and the crests of two of the polish but the silkies seem OK. Considering the makeup of your group, I think that I would try the suggestion of the friend who gave the birds to you. In the meantime look up a source for pinless peepers since that was my solution to my problem. My little black bantam ameraucan pullet wears her pinless peepers and I think she is no longer pecking and eating feathers.

Well maybe I would introduce two birds at a time and of course keep the little brahama chick by herself until she has healed completely. But of course this is just one persons experience and suggestions.

Here I have full body pictures of her

In case anyone wonders yes I know that she is deformed she wont be bred , she is just a fighter so I refuse to give up till she does as its not anything painfull or life threating to her as far as I know.

Thank you for your advice. I just purchased the pinless peepers and should receive them in a week. I am getting 3 EE (8 months old) and 2 brahmas (5 months old) and i also have to integrate them to my other flock (1 RIR, 1 australorp, 1 sex link,1 rock that are 2 months and 1 hamburgs and 1 sebright that are 1 month and half but much smaller because one is a medium size and the other is a bantam) and I am already panicking. As far as baby brahma, i tried earlier to leave by herself but she was so unhappy that i added the 3 small ones. They seems content and do not peck on her. I just hope they will all settle down and behave!

Add as many as you can that are getting along to the established flock at the same time. 1 by 1 is calling for disaster. Divide the coop by fencing so they can see one another and get used to each other that way. Never used the pinless peepers, but I've heard they work as well :) Chicken sunglasses haha
