Silkie thread!

I can't sacrifice any totes but I was hoping they would be alright in large plastic dog crates with a towel or two in the bottom, I'll be stopping every  two to three hours to water the horse, so I can water them at the same time. I have 12 birds and I think 1 large crate that I use for my Lab/Dalmatian, a medium wire and plastic for my basset, and a few cat crates... The animals ride in the car w/o crates, One cat will be pinned up as he and one of my female cats don't like to be in the same room together...

Would they be alright in the front part of a goose-neck stock trailer? I would think they would get plenty of air, but not too much since I could change where the crates face...

This is the trailer...
I moved all my poultry in April, and every single one did way better than I thought. I tried to change things up before moving as much as possible to keep them used to change. They free ranged the day after we arrived. Went in to roost and everything.

So my advice is prep. Make sure to add something new/move things around until you move. They take travel better that way.

I'm not sure how far you are moving? We moved about an hour away. My roosters were crowing on the way, and I had to pull over to stop a rooster from mating a hen who was not enjoying the attention. No one had food or water during that time. It was only an hour after all.

We are moving from Goldsboro, NC (about 1.5hrs south of Raleigh) to Canton, Ohio... So we are saying the drive will be 8 - 12 hours. If it were only an hour I can see not giving them food or water, but since I'll be giving it to the horse I figured they would like a snack while on the road too. Right now they are kept in a pen that I move around the yard once a week and that will be going up with them. My DH and I were hoping to move all the animals at night to hopefully reduce their stress of traveling. I just want to see them all arrive happy and healthy.

That is a long trip, but 8-12 hours really wouldn't require food. Especially at night. They will probably just tip it over and make a mess. If it is hot, water. Sounds like you are in a colder climate, so they really shouldn't need it if you are moving them at night. That would be the best way.

I'd give them food and water halfway through the trip and thats all, don't leave water in the pens cause ya know thats just going to leave a mess. lol
chickens do fine in nice weather without food for a day or two, think about when they ship adult birds they are in transit 1-3 days in a dark box and hardly ever eat/drink even when they are supplied with food in those boxes. :) the trick is to keep them in a a dark but well ventilated spot but not too drafty. if need be cover and zip some plastic or cloth to the cages to block of light and too much breeze in the trailer

if you move animals in the day just make the cages dark to make them think is night

I agree!
What kind of dog crates? Are you talking pet carriers or metal cages?

I have one metal/wire crate but a bunch of medium to large plastic crates that I can use. The larger plastic crates have a wire door and vent holes on the side but not the back... I will try to get some photos of what I have and where in the trailer I want to put them...
