Im fairly new to silkies thought I would post a few pics of my lavender pair they are 6 1/2 month olds cant wait to hatch out chicks in the spring. Also wondering if anyone has guesses on the sex of the paint silkie its about 3 months old and out of a catdance egg, the splash has me wondering to. Thsi is Elvis!

And this is sookie

here is my little paint, hoping its a girl!

And one of my little splashes. I need to work on how to take pics
Elvis looks like a boy to me with his comb but Sooki looks like a girl and the paint I'm not sure but maybe a girl. Best guess and it's a GUESS, LOL

So I took my rooster Curly and a blue pullet to the Durham Fair today. I don't think they have a shot in the dark after seeing some of the other Silkies there.

That's alright. I'm doing this for fun. Next year my Catdance chicks will be ready to go.

Anyway. When I pulled my rooster out of his carrier, they told me I should have entered him as a splash and showed me a gray rooster which to me looked like a very dark blue.
hmm.png
He was almost black. Didn't have my camera with me to take pictures with.. I'll do that Sunday.
But once again. Curly is some sort of a gray, correct? Definitely not a splash?

This is a sad, sad picture of him. lol He was having a melt down after his bath and blow dryin. He'd sit on the floor like a hen sitting on her eggs, refused to stand up. And then when I put him on this little garbage can he's standing on, he freaked out and couldn't keep his balance and kept falling on the floor. Poor Curly is so dramatic. Big mean rooster.

Curly is a stunning Rooster and poor guy I mean his little manliness was all messed up with that blow dryer. He was just imbarrassed about it all,

I tend to think he does look like a Splash. I would think a gray would be all one color and not have the variations Curly has. Even in your pictures after this post he looks like a splash to me. He is gorgeous so congrats to you whatever he is

:lau I would say. Not only do they post beautiful pictures, but then they tell you where to get the hatching eggs. Curly is very handsome. The little paint looks girlish. The splash boyish. But you know silkies at that age!!! I have never had a silkie ckl crow till at least 6 months. Hmmm Peep Blessed Beeaauutiful new avatar. Cotton is a keeper. She needs better aim though. ;) That sizzle is awesome too. I am sure I missed some posts. I gotta go to bed now. Bettter catch up tomorrow.

Okay chickie poo what are you trying to accomplish with these? Do you have a breeding pen you're going to do an experiment in? Inquiring minds want to know. I still don't know anything about the "x". I need to learn. I did just learn that white is not a diluter it's a recessive gene. Someone was going to breed a white x black in hopes of getting a gray. It was interesting. Lots to learn. Here's hoping for some wonderful Lavs and Porcies for you.

I am still trying to name mine. I'm leaning on Tonto or Little John for the partridge and Robin Hood or Zorro for the splash (although if I name the other Tonto then this one should be Lone Ranger but that just doesn't roll of your tongue

). I think Midnight for the black, Sunshine for the buff, and Starlight for the Porcelain. The lavender is either Violet or Sweet Pea. This is hard naming chickens because what it it turns out to be a girl and you name it Zorro

Thank you both!
I will save the Gray color standard on my laptop for future, but I was pretty sure Curly was a gray. lol I've done so much Googleing and looking at pictures and listening to all the smarter people here on the forum and other places. Majority of people call him a gray, so that's what I plan on calling him.
big_smile.png
In the end, I don't think it matters. He's my pet and I thought it would be fun to take him to the fair. This will probably be his first and last time being a show bird anyway.
lol.png
I'm doing this more as a practise run for next year when my Catdance chickies will be old enough. I wish they were big enough now.

The skunks are trying to burrow under my chicken pen where I have my silkies, I have filled in two holes in the last week!!!  Scared for them and wondering if anyoe has any ideas or has ever had this problem?

I would get some hardware cloth and skirt it around your pen. L sape it off your pen on to the ground. You want a good eighteen inches on the ground, if you want you can bury it a little under the dirt or just on top, I like to put a few heavy rocks on it at first then the grass will grow right thru it. I want to go down to the river and get some nice big flat river rock on the heavy side and dig them in a little around my Silkie pen and make like a sidewalk. For now I've been putting those big building blocks with the two holes in them ( cant think what there called right now) around mine till I get my river rocks. The good thing is the grounds so hard right now from no rain it's like a rock.
I was out with my peeps in the orchard yesterday and here come one of those darn hawks flying right towards us I stood up and flapped my arms hoping that would show him how big I was as I'm thinking about attacking him if he kept coming thank goodness he veered off and landed in a tree right by us staring at my chickens. I grabbed up Sassy that can't see good from all her fluff and shooed Rusty in the coop who really wanted to stay out, he looked at me like I was nuts maybe he thought he could take him. He did growl at him. Darn hawk ruined or time in the orchard. :( I wish they would move on.

Got an odd question for those that show..

I posted pictures of my Blue Silkies a while back, I want to try to show one or more of them but if I am still not 100% on whether they are male or female.. Can I still enter them with my best gender guess? They will be 6 months at time of show so there is a possibility they could reveal themselves but I am just worried I will go to show saying I have a girl and everyone there tells me its a boy
