Silkie thread!

I took some pictures yesterday of my little silkie flock :) I merged the 2 month olds with the 5 month olds, and they got along wonderfully, and all snuggle up together at night. Silkies have got to be the most gentle birds to young chicks.

The youngest ones love to hang out in our raised shade plant bed.

Adorable!!!!

I should put my whites together and hatch a few chicks. I only have one hen.

I now have 3 baby blackish silkies. 2 are older than the third. They all seem to be interested in sparring. O boy :/

She is Beautiful Cynthia12! :love

Welcome to the silkie thread. If you wish to breed or show silkies, I would suggest that you look for a breeder in your area rather than purchasing hatchery chicks. The different is quality is measurable.
Unless you are in a warm climate, any chicks that you buy or hatch now, may end up in your house or garage all winter. If you can visit a poultry show this fall, you might be able to purchase sexed silkies that are a few months old. After 2-4 weeks of quarantine, they can possibly be moved out to your coop before the cold weather hits hard.
Even poor quality breeder birds are MUCH MUCH better than hatchery. I really don't like hatchery silkies. In my opinion, the silkies from a hatchery are the worst quality of any breed they sell. The crests are just so tiny and they aren't fluffy at all. Lots have problems with silkie chicks from a hatchery missing their extra toe, and cross beak, etc.

Now that I've mentioned that, has anyone ever got a hatchery silkie that was decent quality? If so, which hatchery?

Ok, so waaaay back there somewhere, and not "that" long ago, I posted that I would post a picture of my Silkies egg that she started to lay..there was a question as to what color your silkies laid.  I said I would post today, but now, with so many posts happening..she/he may not see the picture!  lol..plus, I said, that I would post a picture of my baby frizzle.  Partridge color!  So excited to finally have a Partridge color!!

It really is a nice color of brown.  Not dark, but it is brown.  :)

Just the right size to top a piece of toast.

I have a partridge Silkie..a frizzle silkie..what ever..it's a Partridge in color!!!!  :celebrate

Hello!  I am famous now!  My mug is on BYC!!!!

Frizzle chick...did I say that "she" is Partridge in coloring?   lol...

Sweet baby..
So cute! Are you sure it's frizzled though? My frizzled silkies are very easy to see at this age.

aoxa do you have sizzles and frizzle silkies? This one looks like it may be a frizzle silkie. o by the way if I breed my frizzle cochin to a silkie will I get sizzles or frizzle silkies?

You'll get sizzles (first gen) and smooth sizzles (first gen). You'll have to work at improving their crests and skin, but I'd still call them project sizzles. You won't get any frizzled silkies. You need two copies of the silkie gene to get this. If you took the first generation sizzle and bred it back to a silkie, you would get some frizzled silkies :)

And yes, I have both :) I'm going to take a picture of my frizzled silkie chick that is now a week old. I think it is a frizzled silkie - and the wings are curlier than this one.

He hatched from a paint showgirl egg, he was REALLY off. No, I know the color doesn't breed true and you can get silkies. Even though his color is funny, he's got great toes and he's a sweetheart, so he can stay at least for awhile. He's (I think) around 3 mos old, I'd have to check my records to be sure.

I really don't understand, because my sizzle has been penned up since August. This one should only be silkie, so that's why I said I think it's a frizzled silkie
