Silkie thread!

Ok, so waaaay back there somewhere, and not "that" long ago, I posted that I would post a picture of my Silkies egg that she started to lay..there was a question as to what color your silkies laid. I said I would post today, but now, with so many posts happening..she/he may not see the picture! lol..plus, I said, that I would post a picture of my baby frizzle. Partridge color! So excited to finally have a Partridge color!!

It really is a nice color of brown. Not dark, but it is brown. :)

Just the right size to top a piece of toast.

I have a partridge Silkie..a frizzle silkie..what ever..it's a Partridge in color!!!!

Hello! I am famous now! My mug is on BYC!!!!

Frizzle chick...did I say that "she" is Partridge in coloring? lol...

Sweet baby..
Precious Partridge so cute! Congrats I have my first one too.

OK here are the pics of my new catdance babies. I need help with colors since I'm fairly new with baby down colors. What do these look like to you? These are from her lavender project pen. I think lav roo over lav split, buff, porcelain hens. I have more pics but I didn't want to load this down any more than I had to. Let me know if you need more shots of any of the babies. Thanks for any help.

These are from lav pen with black split roo over lav hens. Should be black or lav but I got a weird one here. What do you think?

And this is from a black egg. I have never seen white feet and so much white on a black. His legs are black. What do you make of this?

The third one over from the left in the second picture looks partridge? Or maybe porcelain? It think.... don't quote me

Also, how many toes does the last one have? Silkies aren't supposed to have white skin, so maybe he's an "accident"?

Only the feet are white, the legs and rest of the baby is black skinned. It has 4 toes on one foot and 5 on the other.

lots of defects. Unless he has a pigment deformity, I still say he is a mix somehow.

CUTE THOUGH!

Here it is.

I really don't understand, because my sizzle has been penned up since August. This one should only be silkie, so that's why I said I think it's a frizzled silkie
lol.png

Let's see if I have a better pic...
Pretty sure it's a frizzle..I guess I didn't get a very good view of the wings dipping, then
going straight up! Plus, the feathering coming in on the toes are all wacky..lol...

I can see the feathers on the wings curling up. Maybe they will increase in the next week. Sure is a cutie.

Thank you

I have high hopes for this one. It is the absolute fluffiest silkie I've ever hatched. It looks like the Michelin man
lol.png

A day or two old here.
The hen it came from gave off a lot of vaulted skulls. I got the mother as a broody for $5 - and I'm very glad I did.
Very cute chick. I got a lot of vaulted skulls in the eggs I hatched from Catdance. $5 is a good deal soooo way to go!

Nice! Not to take away from your beauty here, but I had one that was a pretty little fluff ball..let my friend take her/him. I think it is going to be a darker blue than yours.

Tiny little tot. :) May as well post a couple of pictures of some others I hatched in the past.
Very cute Blue baby. Does the second chick have a partial white toe? I got one like that in my batch. Is that hereditary?

And speaking of frizzle!!

Just for fun, this is a frizzle cochin..LF..He turned out beautiful..little angel here. He actually
grew up to become a pretty nice roo...
What a love and so adorable. Do you have a picture of him now?

His father was a sizzle (many generations) and his mother was a buff laced polish. I wasn't getting any that looked like him when breeding the father to a regular silkie, so I tried the polish. I think they look really cute. I need to get them smaller, get darker skin and better feet. I think it's attainable. Especially since the crest is quite nice!
They both share the same father by the way.

He's my resident porcupine!

(missing tail and most of crest in this picture from bullying)Love, love, love George!

Hey! I am curious about the quality of my silkies. I hatched them about four months ago from eggs I ordered online as show quality. I didn't know much about Silkies at the time and have spent a while now researching this bird and reading up on the standard of perfection. I just want to see if anyone think his wings do not look that great.I believe the term angel wing may be used...I know he will probably fluff out a little bit more as he grows but I am still curious whether or not I should sell him as pet quality. Here's a pic:
I think he's stunning but I know nothing about show quality.

And thanks for everything guys!

I only got one out of her lavender project and it is really light colored with a hint of the silver/lavender feathers. These are darker and the one almost looks like it's got partridge markings but it's probably the angle or lighting. They are cute and I see you got some with the vaulted skull.

Now that definitely looks like a partridge. I can't see the one in the corner very well. The other two have white tips on their wings? I had one like that too that was marked black.

And this is from a black egg. I have never seen white feet and so much white on a black. His legs are black. What do you make of this?

That is very unusual. It will be fun to watch it grow up and how all the colors work out.

Lr, I do believe their is a very cute Partridge in that there box! They are all cute. I have hatched a few Silkies in my time of hatching..three years now..with 4 toes on one foot, and 5 toes on another. Never bothers the chick, just not sure why that pops out like that once in a while..also, not so sure about those white feet? Let the breeder know about it..maybe she can clarify the mystery chick. I tried twice with her, never got any to hatch. Sometimes, it's where they travel from, and to. Very nice to work with me, but it just didn't happen. P.O. handling! I now know very many places not to get eggs from because it just doesn't work out for some reason or another. I do well getting eggs from the mid west, and, parts of Cal. And, the lower parts of the South. Weird ey? I am done hatching for now though. Long time, so, time to let the broody hens give it a try, if I get any to go broody!

cinder, no picture of that rooster. I have a friend that has it up north of me. She says he is beautiful..I should ask for a picture!!

Even poor quality breeder birds are MUCH MUCH better than hatchery. I really don't like hatchery silkies. In my opinion, the silkies from a hatchery are the worst quality of any breed they sell. The crests are just so tiny and they aren't fluffy at all. Lots have problems with silkie chicks from a hatchery missing their extra toe, and cross beak, etc.
Now that I've mentioned that, has anyone ever got a hatchery silkie that was decent quality? If so, which hatchery?

A friend got three Silkies from a hatchery and saw mine, the other day. She was pretty upset as she says that hers look nothing like mine and after seeing mine wonder if she even got pure Silkies.

You described them perfectly. Tiny crests and zero fluffy-- they are nearly flat. She is now getting some 'normal' Silkies :)

Sheila :)

Thanks for the info. I was upset when I saw all the bad toes because I was planning to start my own breeding flock. It seems that some of these toe issues are easily bred out so that's good. I will contact her about the white feet since that seems to be raising the most eye brows. I got two sets of eggs from her all the way to the east coast as far as you can go. I got decent hatches both times. Good variety...except the blacks that keep eluding me. The only one that hatched is the one with the weird colored feet.

And yes the one in the first picture at the far right and the little guy in the middle of the second pic both have partridge markings. I can't wait to see what they will look like.

No, you will not get a mix-breed from Karen (Catdance). She only has Silkies (and I have been at her farm). She does have two, very old, Cochin's- who can barely walk- but they are away from the Silkie barn and I doubt they could breed anyway.

Sheila :)

either way. He's still cute and it will be interesting to see how he turns out.
