Silkie thread!

I just got distracted reading this page where someone claimed that hatchery silkies are closer to the original silkie appearance. :duc

They are quite correct that hatchery Silkies are closer to the original. The Silkie we desire in North America today with the extreme type and crest bears little resemblance to the original. In fact, it would be DQ'd in Europe today for obstructed vision. They also have a LF version of the Silkie in Europe. Suffice to say, that claim is not off the mark.

I agree with Basel. I too got some feed store chicks that came from Ideal, two white pullets and a black cockerel. I also think the whites are better than the other colors, though the black boy wasn't too bad. They actually turned out better than chicks I bought from an active shower and breeder. I'm sure this is the exception rather than the rule, but it is possible.

Cuties, Fur and Feathers!

So I guess Ideal has cute looking pet-quality white silkies!

I am new to this thread, but I'm excited and hubby doesn't want to listen to me gushing about birds... I have six breeder quality Silkies coming from Hat Trick Silkies. I got lucky enough to catch her sale right at the right time and am so thrilled to get birds that I can actually win some shows with! I'm getting 2 black, 2 white, and 2 splash. Very exciting for me!

Well I have been at the computer doing picture control most of tonight. Seems my pictures have been multiplying like rabbits in here. :/ That is so funny aoxa I have to laugh when I hear your stories about the rabbits. (I know how those chickens act it is hilarious)

Thanks for the comments about the chicks.

I need a name for this fella. He is one. I decided to bring him inside and do a little photo shoot. He is molting Half his tail feathers are gone.. His earlobe is a nice blue but you can't see it in the picture. He didn't think too much of the pumpkin.

Cute boy, tiki! Name him Peter as in Peter Peter pumpkin eater! Since he liked the pumpkin so much... Just kidding!

Question:
Does a [would a] lone silkie cockerel crow less than one with other boys around??? Do they need to "show off" more when there are other males around?

Wanting to see if I can keep one of my boys I've fallen in love with. But anyone that said silkies are quieter than LF, I'd say are wrong!! [Based on a few other silkie cockerels I had, not the one I'm thinking to keep.]

Thanks!
