So what exactly does columbian mean new to the silkie world just trying to get a breeding program intact before spring any help would be appreciated. I also have 2 white hens 1 while roo 2 partridge( roo?) 1 black hen the columbian in the pic think is roo. and the other one pictured grey something (roo?) too many roos also have 3 grey sizzles 2-rough 1-smooth hens. so what ya thinkin would liketo get more sizzles

Colombian is just the coloring of your silkie. I was told they don't breed true and my best chance of getting more is breeding my boy to my buff girls with black smutt in their wings and tails. I am new to silkies also, just bought my first ones in May of this year. I know about having to many roos also, out of my original 6 chicks, 4 were boys and 2 girls. I have added to my flock for a total of 13 now but I have 3 that could still go either way on sex, fingers crossed that they are girls but I already have 4 boys so some will be going to new homes if they are boys.


Here is one that I hope is a girl so I have a colombian girl for my colombian boy. If she turns out to be a he, he is out of here.

If this is a boy, I'd give him a chance. He has a better beard than your first one, and could turn out to be a better quality silkie. I'd wait to see, and compare.

Colouring is not as good as your first boy.

haha yeah last night was the first night my girls have been outside in their coop since it has gotten cold here and it rained over night. I was paranoid that they were being stupid and sleeping out in the run because it was too dark to see them. But this morning they walked out of their coop nice and fluffy so I could relax hehe.

I am new to silkie breeding, I just hatched a batch of my own eggs a week ago, and I am hatching another 25 eggs today. My chickens free range all together. If I don't separate them what kinds of colors should I expect to get from my hatchlings? Do white pairs make white chicks, buff make buff etc....etc.... what if a splash mates with a buff? etc....etc.... I also have other larger breeds, but they don't seem to intermingle very much so I am not too worried about cross breeding, ( Should I be?).

Well, if you are not too concerned about showing them then you can go ahead and expect some really interesting colors. Whites should usually only be bred with whites since white is a recessive color, and with recessive genes you can generally see some odd things pop up. I am not too sure about the other colors except that breeding two of the same color should get you the same color, unless you are breeding a blue. Blues can appear in different colors but will still carry the blue gene. Since all of your are together, there is no saying what the end results may be. I am sure they'll be very cute but will also carry different genes to pass on when it comes their time to breed as well.


As for other breeds mingling with silkies, I would say that generally silkie roosters stick to their own hens, BUT other roosters from different breeds probably will try to mate with silkie hens. That could be a problem. Post some pics. I would love to see what hatches

It's real windy so they don't want to come out. This is my splash, who somehow came in 4th of 5 splash pullets at our first show sunday

She lost out on 3rd to a pullet with slipped wings
