wow...you mean you don't use layer even for your girls (hens)? why is this again? should you never use layer? I use Countryside Organics....the LF do spill a lot but the silkies are good with itI rarely use layer; and I too, prefer a high protein feed. 21% is more common here, but 22% would be okay in my book. Right now many are getting lower protein just because feed prices are so darn high.

So what kind of food should you feed to a rooster if a layer feed will damage the kidneys?If you went to the feed store, they may suggest you do. There is a lot of research showing how layer will damage the kidneys of roosters, as well as any pullets or hens that are not laying. That's what the oyster shell is for - to make laying hens' eggs stronger. They take what they need, instead of having to work their kidneys hard to get rid of what they don't need. I hope that makes sense?
