Silkie thread!

I rarely use layer; and I too, prefer a high protein feed. 21% is more common here, but 22% would be okay in my book. Right now many are getting lower protein just because feed prices are so darn high.
wow...you mean you don't use layer even for your girls (hens)? why is this again? should you never use layer? I use Countryside Organics....the LF do spill a lot but the silkies are good with it
My trees are in full colour!

i always feed 22% grower i dont use starter or layer

If you went to the feed store, they may suggest you do. There is a lot of research showing how layer will damage the kidneys of roosters, as well as any pullets or hens that are not laying. That's what the oyster shell is for - to make laying hens' eggs stronger. They take what they need, instead of having to work their kidneys hard to get rid of what they don't need. I hope that makes sense?
So what kind of food should you feed to a rooster if a layer feed will damage the kidneys?
We have a whole bunch of silkies in a pen, all together; 2 roosters, 9 two month old chicks (one a definite boy) and a bunch of hens of different ages. I think they're still on the Nutrena chick starter crumble. Might even be the layer crumble. I better check because I can't remember what their feed bag looks like to save my life.

I just scoop it out of the feed bins and feed. I'm not in charge of the feed orders on the farm and apparently we just switched brands...
