Fabulous!! Color just starting here. The ivy always turns first, but you notice there aren't any silkies running free! :(

If silkies were any more fun I would be in serious trouble!

The reason she/he cannot post photos has nothing to do with iphone; it has to do with not having sufficient posts on byc.  I don;t recall the minimum, but it is more than 7 (# currently listed for robopetz).  Now iphone may be an additional complication; I don;t know; don;t have one.

Yes, there are two issues here. You can have 1000 posts but your phone is not going to let you add a picture to your post without a special app.

Was wondering if anyone had guesses on the sex of my sizzle and frizzled silkie they are both about 4 months old

sizzle
Here is the frizzled silkie

Also what color would you call my smooth sizzle
Thanks for any input I'm fairly new to this and sexing is really hard!
I posted this earlier but no responses, I know its a busy thread, anybody have any guesses. Thanks!

Quote: Ummm, I don't think you answered the asked question. 22% is okay. If you go much higher, you need to supplement with grains or veggies or other food that is low in protein to bring down the overall protein content. I have seen 26, 28 and even 35% protein. All of those are too high to feed regularly unless you lower the consumed protein amount by adding in other foods as I mentioned above.

Are silkies picky eaters? I put some rockmelon yesterday and watermelon today in with them and they won't touch it. I don't remember our bigger chooks years ago being so picky??

Have I just got weird silkie and silkie crosses or does it normally take a bit to introduce them to scraps ???

They were actually a bit strange all round today. They refused to come out of the nesting box where they sleep when I opened up this morning. Normally they come running to go out in the run. This morning one looked at me out the door nesting box door but that was it. They wouldn't come out.

How much scratch grains should my girls get this cold season? I live in New england so it will be COLD and I only have the two that live outside. Yesterday I went out to find them looking like chick-sicles, with frost on their crests and backs

I was like oh I hope that's not bad! They are fine and waiting for their morning food right now lol. But seriously they looked like jack frost's pets hehe.

So what kind of food should you feed to a rooster if a layer feed will damage the kidneys?
We have a whole bunch of silkies in a pen, all together; 2 roosters, 9 two month old chicks (one a definite boy) and a bunch of hens of different ages. I think they're still on the Nutrena chick starter crumble. Might even be the layer crumble. I better check because I can't remember what their feed bag looks like to save my life.:th  I just scoop it out of the feed bins and feed. I'm not in charge of the feed orders on the farm and apparently we just switched brands...

:lau :love

Sonoran answered this question perfectly :) I feed the girls the same as I feed the boys.

Ooo I love your Ivy. Wouldn't that look nice up my barn? Yep.. Spring plan!! :D You have reasons not to let them out. Hawks and what not. We don't have hawks here (though those darn Bald Eagles are quite common in some areas!) Good thing they nest near bodies of water.. We are nowhere near a lake or river.

Not never, rarely.  Not enough protein, not as good a quality of feed as game bird, too much calcium for the boys and youngsters.
:thumbsup

If they aren't used to treats at a young age - they tend to be more picky. My broody raised silkies dive for treats.

Just sharing some recent pictures of my silkies. Love these little birds and looking to add a few more next year.
This is Beaker, hoping for a girl.

The 2 new black girls, no names yet.

This is Grace, my only girl colored like this, love her.

MJ and the 2 black ladies, they are always together

One of my lovely ladies, so happy with the black girls I got.

Same girl as above but she was watching the dog.

Bonnie, one of my buff girls, one of my original 6.

Lola, my lovely odd ball. Don't know what to call her color. Very pretty girl.

Goose my only non bearded girl in the bunch, one of my favorites.

Sam's butt, he doesn't have the sheen to his tail feathers yet but it's getting there.

Bonnie and one of the black girls.

Sorry about the picture overload, I just love sharing my babies. Hope to add a few showgirl hens next year.
