Here in SC we had maybe 5 or 6 inches of snow one year and school was cancelled for like 3 days. If there is any snow AT ALL, even a tiny bit, we get a delay. We just don't know what to do when we see that rare white cold fluffy stuff

We are the same with heat though. You'd laugh at us. She came down to visit here two years ago in August.. I was whining and whining about how darn hot the sun was. She was like.. "What? I was going to ask for a sweater!"

It's what we're used to I guess. Like all that rain in the UK would drive me crazy! I'm sure they are very used to it.

Is there anyone who can help me... I posted this in the emergency section, but since she is a silkie I was hoping someone would be willing to help! My silkie hen is about a year old, first she stopped laying just thought it was because the days were getting shorter, then she started to lay around after I let the flock out into the run in the morning not too long but long enough that I started to notice but she was still eating and drinking and scratching. I brought her into the house this evening to give her a bath and noticed alot of scabbing on her head and noticed she has lice (didn't find any eggs though) but she is white so it is hard to tell, then I noticed she has stopped standing all together. She was walking around this morning kind of stooped over, now she won't lift her chest up at all. I lift her and when I let go her chest drops right back down like she can't hold it up. She holds up her head fine, but not her chest. If someone could help me that would be great!! Thanks

I'm sorry to hear your hen is sick. Is it possible she could be egg bound? I have no experience with this and maybe someone could share some thoughts? Does she have bloody stools? Can she move her legs and feet at all?

Bathing with flea and tick shampoo should help get rid of lice and so will dusting. You could also put VetRx on her nostrils and beak, give her electrolytes (Sav a chick, or gatorade or Pedialyte), give her some baby vitamins PolyViSol (no iron), Vit E, and sprinkle probiotics on her food.

What is the best chick starter grower feed for silkies. My feed store carries DuMor and is 24% protein but I don't know if that is good or bad. The bag says it is for game birds and quail.

This is the best I can do for the time being, so lets hope it holds :/  Otherwise they will be living indoors. Also I have tested the coop for predators, I intentionally set my friend's dog on the coop because she was completely crazy about getting in and killing them. Before anyone says anything she WAS on a leash just a loose one so she could test for weak spots. Needless to say she couldn't get in.

A coon could deffently get in and get your silkies they can get thru and under small areas. They have been known to chew right thru chicken wire its much safer to use hard ware cloth. I would lock them in at night and keep them safe. Good luck.

I am having a new coop built for my silkies because the skiunks keep trying to burrow under my coop and I constantly have to re rock the one I have now. I am also putting it in the barn with the concrete floor. Oregon sure has its list of chicken predators, found one of my neighbors eggs broken open in my field the other day.

a little off topic, but I can't for the life of me, figure out how to edit my signature. I've done it before, a few times. But I can't find it now, I've looked the past 2 days. i am officially losing it we had to put a chicken down this morning and I need to update my signature with the new silkies and losing this one.
