Silkied Ameraucana Project

I am only 2 hours from you! I'll be in Olathe around April 18 picking up 10 chicks. Any chance I could get 6 or so from you?
I work in Lenexa so even closer to where you'll be when you are in Olathe - I'll already be in town. Should have chicks by then to share with you.
I don't mind waiting until spring for eggs, and if your area of KS isn't too far I would make the drive for some splash birds. Is my favorite color.
Louisburg is pretty much 30 minutes straight south of the Kansas City Metro Area. Not sure if I'm closer to you than CatKai - her birds are worth the drive. That's where I picked up my initial flock last year - worth every minute of the drive including the crowing in my ear on the way back

I've got about 1- 2 more months before I know what I have in my last set of chicks I hatched. I have 15 growing out and I'll only keep 2 cockerel's from that bunch. So if there are more than 2, they will be available then. Around maybe May-June I may let some pullets/hens go based on egg color and that's going to be it for birds I'll be letting go of. I don't plan to hatch at all this year, just don't have room or need for more.

Will you be selling eggs then?

Sorry to be late to reply to several PM's, that's next on my list. We got the flu here, my husband was better pretty fast. I have made 4 Dr visits and 1 ER visit... So I am way behind on a lot of stuff... I'll go now to reply to PM's but wanted to post here to reach more at 1 time possible as to why you have not heard back from me...

If anyone knows Italia and can contact her to check on her, she's not logged in here in over a month. I had her # but my phone did an update and ate all my contacts...
I just logged in and saw this. Thanks for thinking of me. I will send a p.m. to you later. I hope you are feeling better. I wish I would have known, I would have sent you a care package

I lost Santiago and thought I had a disease in my flock and was devastated. I lost all but 1 silkied a.m. to freak'n cocci. I did not see the blood in the stool till it was too late. I felt like a murderer and was done with chickens at that time. Nothing has come up since and more chicks have hatched and are healthy, so I guess I am o.k. Made for a really crappy Christmas and B-day present though. So my one little silkied a.m. roo is going to have to carry the torch. He seems healthy though and has a huge personality. Due to loosing all his siblings he by default is still a house chicken. I am soooo looking forward to spring.

Hello All!

I'm finally getting a decent number of eggs from my groups. I currently have Chocolates, Mauves, B/B/S and a Pink project going. The ones that are purely Silkieds are B/B/S and the rest are 'h' splits (referring to the hookless gene, which causes the fluffy feathers) as well as split color-wise to chocolate or lavender. It's a lot to keep straight.

Hardiness is extremely good now, this many generations from the original birds I got from Julie. I have been weathering the evil cold temps we've suffered in the middle of the country without any losses whatsoever- and that is real testimony!! I have a couple of silkied chocolate chicks under a broody Marans, and I'll get pics of them up soon.

I'll probably have enough eggs cranking out soon that I'll be able to sell. I noticed there were some spats regarding prices and whatnot on the old thread. Message me if you're interested. :)

Finally actually set some eggs yesterday, been a crazy year so far! It was interesting organizing the eggs by color to cull them. The difference between the 25% cutoff groups was pretty noticeable that way. Culled the bottom 25% outright, the next 25% are greener than I'd like, the next 25% are pretty blue, and the final 25% are on the too pale side of blue. Have 3 dozen project bird eggs in all told incubating, so it'll be an exciting hatch if all goes well. Now waiting on enough eggs to start incubator #2.
