Silkied Ameraucana Project

Hey, just spotted this thread, Very interesting! I'm a novice to the Silkie chickies.

Are you crossing LF Ameracauna's to silkie?

Are the chicks born with 4 toes like the AM's or 5 toes like the Silkiie's?

How large or small are the offspring in weight, height etc.?

Probably sounds like a stupid question....just trying to get my head wrapped around this project.
Thanks for your kind and informative reply,,,Chirp

These are not bred to a Silkie. They are PURE Ameraucana. please read the first post, it explains how they came about. They came from 2 chicks that hatched with the mutation gene which caused the silkied feathers and now a handful of folks are continuing the process. It is called project due to them being as rare as they are and trying to add new blood to them by adding smooth feathered AM's. They are LF and gorgeos

Thanks, re-read. Goodness, guess that's where I got lost...
Sooo, looks like I too would like to learn more about this process/project.
They are beautiful! I've always thought the silkies were cute, just to small for me. But, pure AM and LF too, wow, want to be a part of this project! Love the photos..... Chirp

I highly recommend reading the original thread if you are thinking of joining the project -- it's pretty informative and having a grasp of what happened early on in the project history helps give context to the current goals members have. Long, but worth it in the long haul :)

Enjoying it right now....on page 17. Wish I had learned about this way back then, oh well...just need to catch up. Fascinating, dare I say....I want some too! Chirp

Not sure if anyone has eggs for sale just now, but there were some recently and probably will be again in not too long. Occasionally you'll see adult birds for sale too, but usually they are not shipped and must be picked up.

I think the blue broody that did a decent job sitting and hatching her eggs earlier this year may be going broody again. She's been sitting in the favorite nest the last couple of days with her babies when I check, often on 2-4 eggs. Of the ladies who tried to brood eggs she was the only one that actually took care of them after they hatched. Trying to figure out what I want to put under her.

Well I can home from work today and found my Marans hen died. As I was going to check on the others I found feathers and knew right away they belonged to a Silkied Am. Started looking for the Silkied Am and found two of my d'Uccles dead, more feathers found both the splash and blue cockerels in the run and I believe they got feathers just pulled out still no sight of the blue girl. I know at this moment that a dog got on our yard while we were at work and wrecked havoc my birds. So I decide to do some asking around and started talking to the Amish kids two doors down and they say there father shot pellets at a white dog that was in their cabbage. They then came back with me to help look for missing birds we found two more dUccles dead. Then Mary said look there's a raccoon under the tree I see it, she said. I knew right away it was the blue girl. She wasn't dead bit in shock and her eye looks swollen, so I brought her in the attached garage and put her in brooder to rest with 2 young dUccles and a wheaten Oe chick. I hope she makes it through the night. I also found 2 AM chicks hatched from pips and peeps dead. But the other 3 were fine, mother hen died. My 2 dark Cornish and one Marans hen are now rumpless. My poor babies had a horrible day and I will have to lock them up all day tomorrow, even though half will fly out of the layer run and there's no way to keep the lavender in a run, but the Silkied am can't fly and the dUccles will be locked in so most will be safe. I told the old man I want to learn how to shot the .22 because if I catch a strange dog in the yard I think I'm going to shot first and not ask questions later. Horrible evening
