Silkied Ameraucana Project

Lost the black silkied pullet overnight. Not many black silkied left in my project right now. At least theblue/black splits are thriving.

Awww crud! I hate when that happens. Sooo sorry.

Will you have a necropsy done to find out what the cause was?

That's so awesome! I was hoping to join the project this year, but construction on the new chicken complex keeps taking a back seat to vacations.

I've read all the threads and will keep following along until the time is right!

Keep up the good work everyone, and keep posting pictures.

No, I probably should find a contact to do that though for better diagnosis. I took a look at her before I buried the remains, nothing I could determine was obviously out of kilter internally, she was small even compared to the other SiAm girls. Wasn't an impacted crop (empty) and all the other birds in her pen look fine. I'm chalking it up to genetic issues since no one else seemed distressed. We did have a cold snap recently, but I don't think the weather was enough to stress her out.

OK, one more time, that cross is NOT a silkied Ameraucana.  .  There are and were NO Silkies, EVER crossed into Silkied Ameraucana.  ALL SiAms are descendants of a single pair of pure Ameraucana with a spontaneously mutating recessive feather gene.  What you are contemplating will take decades of concentrated test breeding to weed out a plethora of errant genes that serve absolutely no purpose but to degrade the integrity of the SiAm gene pool.

Cross breed and experiment all you like - but make SiAms like this? No. They would be a hybred  Silkie X EE.

I understood that from reading the original thread and do not mean to degrade the integrity of the SiAm project in the slightest

I think it is mainly just a sore subject for our project. After all, Ams in general have to fight the confusion caused by hatcheries selling out and out EEs as pure breed Ams. Add in that our project has a lot of folks thinking they are Silkie crosses when they come across the thread and the repeated need to state that isn't what we are doing here. If they read about those cross projects on this thread it'll make it more confusing.

Egg update: Incubator 1 (41 in turner, 5 hand turned down side) only had 2 clears and no RRoDs, so 44 going along swimingly so far. Will candle Incubator 2 next monday. Incubator 3 will be warmed up today to verify temperature control. After that it's just hatcher warm up then rolling weekly hatches.

Assuming good hatch viability I'll be much closer to sharing eggs. I want to verify there are no unexpected issues with the SiAm x SiAm pen and make sure I have chicks in the works in case something happens to my breeders.

Had my first hatch from these guys on Sunday and got a pretty even 50 50 on Lavs and Black split to Lav.

Next hatch due on the 12 from these guys and from my Silkied Black pen. That one is a nail biter as I'm waiting to see if I get more "Smokey" chicks from my Black pen
