Silkied Ameraucana Project

I've been lurking here for quite a bit, but since I am planning to dive headfirst into your lavender project, Trish, I thought I'd chime in because I also think the smokey chicks are fascinating.

So, do you think your adult roo that stayed slightly lighter than your blacks may actually have 2 copies of the smokey gene compared to your other 2 smokey chicks that turned black as they grew in their adult feathers? Reading the info above, 1 copy of the gene equates to smokey chick down, black adult feathering. But 2 copies of the gene equates to both smokey chick down AND smokey adult feathering. Since you actually HAVE an adult bird that is displaying a dark gray color, it seems to me that that roo must be homozygous.

I also thought about that but considering how few of them I hatched I thought it must be impossible that both the roo and a hen was carrying this.

I am thinking maybe the one that stayed lighter could have this smoky gene(?) and also be homozygous for Lavender

I put him over a couple of the split hens from last year because I want to see this color on a smooth bird since the fluff of Silkied feathering distorts the color a little. Also that will tell me if he is carrying Lav.

On another note I did have that very first chick that hatch smokey colored get lost in my Silkied Blacks. It is possible that one of the seven girls I am breeding to my Lav roo may also carry this. I am curious to see if I will hatch any this color from that pen so be on the lookout for this when you hatch.

This project is so fascinating! I've been trying to absorb everything over the past couple weeks but I'm still pretty blown away.

Would anyone know where I can purchase some hatching eggs? I'm only allowing myself one project breed this year (heck, for the next several years if I can stick to a breed and love it) and honestly, now I can't see myself doing something else.

I would try and find a breed locally but I'm from deep, DEEP south Texas and we mostly have game birds down here and common breeds.

To everyone who has been working with this type of Ameraucana since it first showed up in 2008, wow. I congratulate you for sticking with it and working so hard. The birds I've seen so far are gorgeous!

I love mine and wouldn't give them up for anything!

I can ship you some hatching eggs if you like Lavender/ Black. I'm about 2 weeks out with orders right now.

Woah, really? There are only couple people I know right now who have purebred Ameraucanas (most around here have brown egg layers and the occasional EE) but one has black and the other has Lavender. That would pretty much be perfect. I'm trying to recall through my insomnia, but mixing straight feathered AMs with SiAMs will produce half silkied/half straight chicks, right? Or something along those lines. I'll go back and review. Pretty sure someone put up a chart for me, the plebeian chicken owner, haha!

Edit: Never mind about that chart. I read, got confused, retread and now I understand. You get splits! Hazah! Either way, I'm still very interested.

How much do you charge for how many eggs? I gotta do some calculations and prepare myself for this. ~__~

Trish is the go to gal for Black/Lav SiAms. BBS/Choc/Mauve Siams are not as far along, but those are in my court and I can hook you up with eggs for those.
TX is being very hard core with the bird flu thing going on - should have my NPIP done in about a month and I will be shipping chicks, (splits only tho), after that.

How hard was NPIP on the Missouri side? Planning on doing this on the KS side as soon as I finish one final round of culling.
