Silkied Ameraucana Project

blue roo over 2 splash, 5 blue, 3 black (and at the time, the 4th black who turned out to be a roo). But even if stealth black was mating before I moved him, I'd still expect the dominant roo to have bred the ladies.

Couldn't confirm the numbers, as my luck has it the pen door fell clean off (storm came through, my dad no longer gets to complain about MY construction skills - that was his handy work, lol). That pen is going to be messed up for a few weeks now since they are out with the free rangers.

Sounds like just crazy odds going on with the Blues then. I'm sure next you'll hatch a bunch of Splashes and hardly any Blues lol.

I once hatched like 25 or so Cream Legbar girls in a row with no boys anywhere in sight! Sometimes crazy odds happen.

Hope you get the pen all fixed up quickly!

Finally got that first splash - out of the second hatch. 27 chicks in to get one. Not that I mind, I am working away from splash, just boggles my mind that it's going so swimmingly towards blue and black.

This second incubator is hatching earlier (too high temp, but I only have one logger so I can't track the historical temperature data) and the humidity actually was low - sticky chicks. I need to bath the remainder when I get home so they can dry off proper. For now they are hanging in the incubator still.

I think I screwed down every last thing I could on the coop door, so it's going nowhere. Not a pretty job, but if it breaks again I'll be shocked. Time to repaint it I think.

So I thought I would update on my Blue/ Smokey Silkied thing I got going on. I had my first hatch from my possible Smokey guy and results were interesting.

I hatched a few Black, a few Lavender and one Smokey Blue chick. Soo this tells me he is DEFINTELY at least carrying Lavender (and may even be Lav/Lav) which would explain why he didn't turn completely Black like the others.

Here are his babies

I'm hoping to hatch a bunch of them and see how this gene behaves when I breed them together.

Now I'm am super curious if he is Lav/Lav. Wondering if I put him over pure Lavenders I could maybe figure it out. If he is homozygous for Lavender I'm thinking maybe I will hatch only Lavender and "smokey Blue" but if he is heterozygous then I should get Lav, Black and more Smokey Blue.

Anyone have any ideas for me? I still don't know what to make of all this

No idea on the smokey gene, I wonder if it's something like a mutated lavender. One copy shows up as a chick, but as it's really a recessive, doesn't affect adult. Two copies shows up as a chick, then as a recessive with both copies shows up as an adult? Dunno, lobbing out ideas in case one sticks. Sure is a curious thing. Have you asked on that color genetics thread? I wonder if someone there has seen something similar.

I have 4 black silkied out of the first hatch (2 weeks old), several blues, and lots of lovely splits from the crosses to unrelated (so many wonderful black splits, yes!). Tons more blacks that are in the next hatch (1 week old) but haven't done a silkied/split count yet. This current hatch has 5 project chicks out, 1 splash and the rest black; having incubator issues with this one spiking up to 102 now so I don't know how many more will hatch out of this round.

I know you aren't supposed to count your chickens before they hatch, but it's hard to not also count them before they've made it to maturity, too. Waiting is hard.

Sounds like you have lots of nice chickies hatching there

AWESOME!!!!! Congrats!!!

So I think maybe you could be on to something with a mutation on the Lavender possibly.

Nicalandia informed me that since smokey mutation is a reverse mutation of dominant white it can't be smokey. So that theory is out.

So...If it is a mutation than maybe it could have something to do with the Lavender???

IDK I guess I'll have to play around with it and see what I get in the Fall.

I can have some end of week. My pen is silkied splash roo to splash split girls. I have 3 splash split girls and one blue split girl. Let me know if I can help you.
I am just starting to stalk this thread and I'm so intrigued! I'd love to see some of these lovelies in person. How far are you from Brevard, NC?
